you see i had a pretty lousy couple of months and had stopped running because i would often have to go in the woods, or even--yup knock on someone's door and beg to use their toilet!!!! (IBS means let go of shame!) and i used to run about 40 miles a week, and then i became someone who couldn't walk the dog without rushing back home to go...
but now, i am applying for a new job, my mind is much more calm and clear (yeah, yoga) and i have not had an episode in about a month and a half--and i have my period and i am still doing well!!
i just really wanted to share that sometimes good does come around... and encourage you all to keep on with the acidophilus, food diaries and exercise and rest and all that jazz... (and for me no gluten)
--i do not mean this as a boasting or anything--i am just truly happy to have not crapped my pants while running, i had to share it with all of you, since you are all the first i come to when i do crap myself!
you all rock!!!

what would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?
Woo hoo, Bunny!
I know how frustrating that was for you to stop running. Glad you are back to it again.
What did you do to get yourself back to a version of normalcy?

I am so happy to hear that you are doing much better and good luck with the job ! :)
so here is what i do: i keep track of everything i eat, i think i have a banana a day, no gluten, water (at least 8 8oz glasses before dinner time) and tea, acidophilus, nexium, multi vitamin and a b complex. i also have been meditating/journaling, yoga and walking (now running!)
also my husband keeps me in check mentally--he is a great support system. and i celebrate all the good poops!!
i honestly think that stupid bacterial overgrowth screwed me all up... but i also think i will be able to handle any episodes i may have in the future... even now with my stupid period i am doing okay (i had problems earlier this week that ended up being an allergy to soap!)
maybe i have accepted it... either way, it was nice to go running and not throw undies away!!

hey bunny,
what exactly is an overgrowth of bacteria? - also what might be the symptoms of it and how would one go about testing for it?
i'm a bit confused about the whole area - i've heard phrases like c-diffiicil and candidia - are these an overgrowth of bacteria?
my symptoms seem to be a general upset gut with loose movements (tho almost always formed) - i get a lot of bloating/winding and occasional D/C - just wondering if a bacteria overgrowth might be more problem - or is constant D more of a sign?
eerrrm... you can scrap telling me what candida is, just found out it's a girl thing and therefore obviously wouldn't apply to me
but any info about an overgrowth of bacteria/yeast in the GUT would be cool!

roadtrip, the way it was explained to me: bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine is the bacteria that normally die off naturally through the colon actually found its way into the small intestine and hung out. the only way to get rid of it is through antibiotics and then to replenish your good bacteria.
my symptoms were the following (but i am not sure what is ibs, and what is the overgrowth) lots of loose stools, undigested food in them, explosive diarrhea, cramping (stabbing pains, like i ate knives), i also had blood in my poops a lot (over a month straight--but i had a polyp), then i got "pins and needles" pains in my arms and legs (which i take the B-complex for), fatigue, i also had anemia. i would have the poops up to 15 times a day (nothing compared to sarita!) but it was painful and prevented me from working...
i had a lactulose breath test. i fasted for 12 hours and then had a "breathalyzer" type thing administered every 15 minutes for about 2 hours. they measure the methane and hydrogen the bacteria are releasing when they 'eat' the sugary lactulose. afterwards i had diarrhea and cramping. my results were literally off the chart and it was determined i had an overgrowth. my doctor (who was a jerkface) 'forgot' to tell me the result, so i had some delay in my treatment (apparently, this is a relatively new test and the medication, Xifaxan, i had is doing a study right now to see if IBS is related to overgrowth and people are actually being misdiagnosed... so i actually suggest that you ask about getting the test (mine was $167, but covered by insurance). the drug though is normally given to those with e-coli or travlers diarrhea for 3 days, so there was some insurance talk and explanation to allow me to take it for two weeks. but with the exeption of strange stools associated with my period (which you being a male might not be aware of...) my stools have been formed and light brown AND the urgency is controlled--it is hard to get used to. but i was having bloody/black mush that looked like food--so it is a big change.
i suggest anyone getting the test if at all possible.
hope my rambling helped! i hope you find relief!!!
