I will introduce myself as one more newbie to the group. I would like to know if anyone in the group experiences sinus problems related to GERD. I have chronic sinusitis which I was told by my physician may be attributable to acid reflux. I would appreciate anyone sharing experiences or comments re this. Hi Sunflame. No, I don't have sinus problems but I can identify with the GERD. I'm doing so much better now that I've given up the tap water. If you haven't see the thread posted by Northern Joe on the bad effects of tap water on GERD, it's worth your while to check it out. This is a great site and you'll find lots of folks here who will try to help in whatever way they can. All have some problem they're dealing with and so we have bonded together to help each other. I have sinus problems alot, and also have GERD. I also read an article in a magazine at my pharmacy that scientist were investigating a possible link between the two. Not sure how they are connected, but apparently we aren't the only two questioning such a correlation...

When I take meds, I take: Colozal 750 mg. 3x3, Immodium 2 mg. 2x2, Protonix 40 mg. 1x2, Darvacet as needed...( I stopped taking them recently)
Working with doctor number, oh I lost count...

Hi, my teenage daughter has gerd. She takes protonix 40 mg twice a day. for the 7 years prior to her gerd diagnosis the had sinus problems and a cronic cough, all of which have cleared up since she started protonix. The acid would spray up and aggrivate her sinuses and she would breath in the fine spray which irritated her lungs and gave her the cronic cough. They now are aware the younger kids can have gerd and when a child is diagnosed with asthma and allergies which dont get better with treatment they now look for gerd. Too late to help her but at least other kids wont have to suffer as long as she did with the wrong diagnosis.
Sorry I forgot to mention that her gastroenteroligist said it is very common to have sinus problems and coughs with acid reflux, because when the acid spays up it rritates everything not just the esophogus.
Your post is a year old but I wanted to say that I have had sinus problems every winter for the past 6 years - with accompanying antibiotics, which I suspect is linked to GERD. This winter, however, I began saline irrigation - you make your own solution with 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. salt dissolved in 1 cup warm water. Then you fill one of those mucus syringes you use on babies (or I guess some people use a turkey baster) and, standing over the sink, squirt the warm liquid into your sinuses. If you're a novice, just shoot it straight toward the back of your head (not UP) and let it drain out, but after a while you can maybe squirt it in one nostril and have it come out the other, or be able to spit it out. At any rate, thank God, I just made it through a winter without a sinus infection. In fighting mode, I do the irrigation 4 times/day.
YES...The sinus stuff is just awful and the worse my gerd is the worse my sinus stuff. my nostrils just burn....I feel like I am breathing a strong chemical into my nose ....my nose is super dry and I have post nasal drip...Just yucky.
I am new here, and have had chronic sinusitis symptoms. I hoping they will resolve with treatment. I have constant headaches, and sore throats, and tiredness, and drainage.
My GERD is so bad it causes problems with my asthma and sinus problems and then the stuff they give you for that aggravates my stomach more. Can't win I guess. Barb

I am a "known asthmatic" for a number of years. Of course using saline drops is a good idea for my sinus situation.
I am not sure what my GERD status is. Will be seeing a new GI guy on the 28th of August. Please keep me in your thoughts that day. I need good vibrations!
My acid reflux is the cause of my asthma. Back in 2000 I had a bad gallbladder and had heartburn 24/7 for 3 months. It was awful and then I ended up with the asthma. So the worse my heartburn is then the asthma starts up and sinus problems. I do use saline nose spray also. Barb

I had very bad allergies with asthma. I took theodur as a bronchodillator since the "rescue inhaler" was very unpredictable. (People were actually dying from them!). Anyway the pill (theodur) dilated my muscles and caused my GERD. I don't really know what my status is a my old GI guy was a poor communicator. Can't be just a good robot and listen to the doctor, you know...my health is involved.
Hi Joan, I also have alergies too that activate the asthma. I hope you have better luck with your new doctor. It is important to have a doc that listens and works with you. I really like my PCP who has been my doc for 12 years but after my surgery for stomach he just kind of gave up on the heartburn because he didn't know what to do so I have just lived with it until it got so bad I couldn't anymore. I think the new stomach doc he sent me to will work with me to solve this heartburn and the cramps and diarrhea problems. Let me know how you do with your new doc. Barb

Thank you pandacrazy...it is good to know somebody on the GERD board is rooting for me. Am really tired of the whole thing. I did go and buy slippery elm lozenges which are very good for my more or less continuous sore throat. I have also really lowered my caffeine intake. My PCP is also great, thank goodness. Have you thought about maybe you have IBS-D? I have IBS-C and have done well with that. Will be hoping and wishing for you to get the help you need.
I know how sick of the GERD that you are because I am 43 and have been dealing with it since age 14. I didn't have to start using prescription meds until I was in my early 20s. They are thinking I might have IBS-D. I think it might be a bacterial infection though because it came on so suddenly. I want the doc to do a test called the hydrogen test that I read about in the IBS section here. I bet if you got rid of all the caffeine completely it would make a big difference. Another thing that my new doc told me was to never drink anything carbonated either. I find it does help. I often wake with sore throats when the reflux is really bad. It feels like my throat is burned. Some other things that may help are vitamin B, calcium and acidophilus. Hope these suggestions help. It could be and maybe would be worth looking into. I am alergic to milk which causes me to have sinus infections and constant draining when I eat anything with it in it. Barb

I went and drove to another town and bought slippery elm lozenges. They are very good for clearing up my throat soreness. I have decided not to eat and watch the news anymore. The WORLD SITUATION is really tough on my stomach. I am trying to lower my caffeine level and did lose some weight...almost 20 lbs since May.
Yeah stress is not good for the stomach. I didn't watch the news at all when my son was over there for 7months. I just couldn't handle that. I still don't like to hear anything about the war. It breaks my heart everytime another mother loses a son or daughter because of the war. I can't tolerate any caffeine at all. I have lost 15 since June 1st. Am trying to lose more weight at the present time. It will help. I know from past expierience. Barb
