Sorry for being so "needy" but..

I'm new to all this!!

OK so for the last 2 nights I moved my insulin shot up 1 hour prior to bed.. I also cut out my snack last night.. .still no change...

I did some test during the night and here are the results:

9:00 pm 110 2 hours after dinner/bedtime

12 am 99

2:30 am 105

6:30 am 107 Fasting

does those numbers look like the Dawn Phenomenon kicking in?

I think I just need to up my insulin does.. it just does not look like it is doing anything.. what do you think?

What numbers are you looking for??  Those numbers are acceptable!!  you would like to be right around 100, acutally as someone with gestational diabetes, under 110-120 for fasting.  So you are OK!!!  Sit back and enjoy your pregnancy as long as your numbers stay right there.  A few more units of insulin probably wouldn't hurt just to get your highest numbers down to 100 and your lows between 85 and 90.  BUT, the numbers you have now are not bad.  Your call.  if  you want to add 3-5 more units, ask your doctor.

My fasting numbers should be below 90... Obviously that is not the case :) I'm just trying to figure out if the PD is occuring to make my fast number jump that high.. either way i suppose more insulin in the only solution correct?

Hi Turtledove,

Ok, gestational diabetes is diagnosed from a number of different angles, but in your case it was the fasting numbers.  Typically when your fasting blood glucose is above 126 mg/dl (7 mmol/l), you have gestational diabetes.  As I said earlier, and the goal of treatment is to keep your blood sugar in the normal range. This is the best way to prevent complications for the baby and a difficult delivery. In order to achieve these goals:

  • Fasting glucose should be kept at 95 mg/dl (5.3 mmol/l) or lower
  • 2 hour post meal blood sugars should be kept at 120 mg/dl (6.7 mmol/l) or lower

So, you are a tad off the 95 and could probably up your insulin dose, but you absolutely have to talk this over with your doctor. Trust me, you are a bit high but not THAT high and a slight increase in your before bed insulin will probably get you to where you want to be in the morning.

Thanks oh great one! :)

I guess I was just looking for reassurance that upping the dosage was the best plan of action and re-doing my shot schedule or snack was a not really going to change anything...

Since I'm so new to all this I tend to second guess myself - KWIM?

Thanks again!
