Synthroid and LEG SWELLING

Hi everyone,

I know this has been brought up in the past, but I've never seen anyone post when or if they found out what was causing or how they solved their edema relating to or caused by Synthroid.

Almost immediately after taking Synthroid, my legs swelled up like balloons from my knees to my ankles and have stayed that way since. They are not painful, but are VERY noticeable. Wearing anything other than flip-flops is challenging. I have been to my PCP MANY times and all she does is give me prescriptions for LASIK and tell me that I'm either drinking too much water or eating too much salt. I also went to my Endo who sent me for a leg scan to test for blood clots (negative), chest x-ray (clear), multiple blood tests (nothing unusual according to her), and so she just upped my LASIK and added Potassium -- NOTHING HAS WORKED! The swelling has not gone down AT ALL! And this has been going on since August!!! I have just learned to "live with it," until I can get in to see a "holistic doctor" in November, but in the meantime, I occasionally search the internet and although I've seen people with this same issue / question, I never see them post a follow-up.

Has anyone dealt with this and had it "go away"? Has anyone switched from Synthroid to Armour and found the leg swelling improve?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

My father had edema as a result of being hypo but not because the Levo itself..!
Do you have thyroid blood results ,TSH,FT3/4, if so post them with reference ranges, how long have you been on Synthroid?
When his levels where adjusted properly the edema went away!

Thanks, I will get my #s and post them after this Hurricane passes through. I have been on Synthroid (100 mcg) since August. I know my TSH went from 18.99 to 1.015, but my doctor is not great about giving me my other numbers (yet another reason I am looking for a new doctor...). I am encouraged, however, hearing that once the levels were right, your father got relief from the edema.

I read your post today from 2012, so who knows if this reply will ever find you and if I get a reply. Did they ever figure out what was going on with the edema you were experiencing? I was put on levothyroxine and the second day, I woke up and was so weak I could not walk and was full of fluid. I should have gone to the ER but did not becasue of the coronavirus outbreak. Since then my doctor has just performed multiple blood tests and nothing has gotten better. I am in a wheelchair because I cannot walk and it feels like my body is filling up with fluid and I cannot get rid of it.

I quit taking Synthroid slowly. I still have my thyroid intact . I had Graves disease at first then my thyroid got very slow.
I did not have radiation. I have been on various things trying to heal whatever is wrong I was taking large doses of vitamin B1 near the end of taking Synthroid. I was also taking Black seed oil, Vitamin D 3 and zinc. I did not take the zinc daily three time a week . My left ankle and leg were swollen all the time and it was after I started Synthroid not before. After I went off the Synthroid my ankle swelling is completely gone. I have been off of it for a couple of weeks I will let you know when I get my blood tests it will be a little while yet.
