I bad diarrea last week, so i started taking pepto bismal which helped a bit then now the last three days i have bad painful stomach cramps as i hadn;t gone to the bathroom number 2 during those three days well then i hit i went to the bathroom but i was so constiptated it felt like i was giving birth now have a small hemeroid because of the strain. Later on in the evening now i have the runs. I was in the middle of walmart and i could feel it starting so we rushed home i sat on the toilet and nothing came out. I have not noticed any blood but i wonder if this is what IBS is like because if so i have to talk to my family doc about at my next appointment. I started taking the pepto again to see if it helps settle my tummy if not i cannot go into work tommorow. also wearing a panty liner just in case, how imbarrassing sorry about being so graphic but it is the only way i can describe how i feel. can someone reply back to me. Thanks Twiggy2
Hi Twiggy,
I'm sorry to hear about your D attacks. Most, if not all, of us here have had an experience like yours while being out shopping or at a restaurant. D can hit you anytime, anywhere.
Tell us a little more about you... Have you been having D just last week or has it been constant? What other symptoms are you having (gas, cramps, nausea, etc.)? Could you have picked up an intestinal virus? Have you changed your diet? There are many things that can cause D.
Here's a guideline the docs use for diagnosing IBS (info taken off IBStales.com):

Thanks for your reply most of the symptoms are relative i am called in sick from work today and going to the walk in clinic, still having abdomanal pain a bloated feeling. I take tyelnol 3 which i know can casue constipation but i never had it that bad before in my life. So i don;t think its totally because of th tylenol, anyway so far i don't feel the need to go to the bathroom but it;s early in the morning. I will drink fluids so not to get deydrated if i get more D, i will write to let u know what the walk in clinic do says, i would rather go the ER because they can run some tests there i don;t know what there going to do at the walk in talk to ya later Twiggy2
Good luck, Twiggy! Please let us know how your visit goes.

well i went to the walkin clinic explained pretty muc everything, i told him about being on t3s for pain he said that was probably the cause of the bowel problem from the codiene he say increase fibre or stool softner and that should help, on Mon i'll call my family doc and see if he can prescibe a pain med that isn;t so hard on my stomach. thanks Twiggy2
Well, that's pretty encouraging. Hopefully your problems are nothing more serious than med side affects.
Please let us know how your apt. on Monday goes.

Red flag symptoms which are NOT typical of IBS:
- pain that often awakens/interferes with sleep
- diarrhea that often awakens/interferes with sleep
- blood in your stool (visible or occult)
- weight loss
- fever
- abnormal physical examination.
Hi 7Lil,
What is red flag symptoms? I had the first 2, and can you elaborate on abnormal physical examination (the last point)?
Thanks for your help.
I've had the first 2 also, but i can only recall one time which that happened.
DX'd with IBS May 2006
Current Medications :
None, but occasionally carry Seirogan for fast relief from D.

Frankly I think those "red flag" symptoms are bull. I've had 1, 2, 4 & 6.
In my opinion "abnormal physical examine" means if they find anything at all. IBSers supposedly are normal and healthy with the exception of their guts being off balance. Everything else, like your temp, blood work, ultrasound, scopes, etc., should be normal.
My #6 abnormal physical examine was when my Vitamin B12 and Folic Acids were so low they were convinced I had IBD. My doc couldn't figure out how I was so deficient considering I had a healthy diet, yet 2 vitamins which are only absorbed in the intestines weren't getting through.
I think "they" need to start over with their guidelines for diagnosing IBS.
