Total colectomy and dehydration

Hi all,
I am new to this forum-- Just found it. I usually hang around the ACSN -American Cancer Survivor network forum, but there aren't too many total colectomy members there. I had a hemicolectomy in March, but after finding more cancer-- (long story)-- a total colectomy was performed last Thursday-- a week ago. I went home after five days but had to return 2 days later with extreme dehydration and elevated white blood cell count. I had been vomiting all night so the dr. re admitted me. NG tube went back in, so did the IV with hydration and TPN for nutrition. Today, sunday, I am better-- the NG tube is out and I am supposed to start back with liquids only. My DR. had told me that I could eat anything-- so that's what I did--- did not work- This time I will take it slowly. Can anyone give me advice on how to stay nourished and hydrated? nHow do you adjust work and bms? I am a highschool teacher--- No time for lots of bms---

This forum seems like mostly ladies with total colectomies-- all nice and down to earth. Please share with me what has worked for you.

Hi, Neelie,
I, too, am struggling with the results of my total
colectomy.  I can't seem to find people in here to talk about it.  Maybe I'm not working this thing right.
Anyway, my problems is lots of loose BM and loss
of weight.  Suppose to go back to work next week and not looking forward to it.
Any information from anyone would be great.

Hi Linda & Neelie,

There is a lot of information that has been posted over the last few months in the total colectomy section.  Under ostomies, and then Total Colectomy, followed by parts 2, 3 & 4.  There are a lot of unique stories within all the posts.  It would be a great help to read those first and see if some of your questions have been answered/discussed. As far as I know, most or all of the ladies on these boards have had partial/subtotal/total colectomies due to colonic inertia/severe constipation. 

It looks like you are both having separate issues--I'm sure if you post under total colectomy part 4, someone can/will relate to your issues :)  It may also be that people don't see these messages from you if they automatically pull up the total colectomy part 4 string.....

Hope that helps--there's always room for new members on our postings!  I had surgery in January and was fortunate enough to have talked to 2 women before surgery....but this site has helped a lot since then--we all help each other!
