Is there anyone else who has had their large intestine removed and the small attached to the sigmoid? I just had this on Feb. 28 and am desperate to find info on what my diet should be right now, what it will be for the long term, and anything else that might be of help??? My Dr's have been zero help and I was sent home from hospital with instructions to slowly resume regular diet. But I've seen on other websites that some foods can never be eaten again. I really am afraid that this surgery was the wrong move - but I guess time will tell.

I just had 3/4 of my colon removed on the 17th of March. Didn't end up with a bag, they were planning on taking the whole thing but was able to save something. They were going to attach the small bowel to the rectum too. I've been doing pretty bland foods since coming home. I tried to much food the first week home and was really sick.
I'm doing grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken noodle soups and such. Still running to the toliet but the surgeon says it will get better. I'm usually in the lupus area, but I'm find loads of help here too.

Well, I'll start by saying that since I posted on March 22, things have improved immensely. I too could hardly eat anything without running to the bathroom with terrible diarrhea. I stayed with the bland foods, cream soups, crackers, pasta, cream of wheat, puddings, LOTS of yogurt, water, green tea, toast & peanut butter, that kind of thing. I wasn't sure if I would ever start to improve, but I have! I actually went back to work today (just half a day) and only had 2 bathroom sessions - the last session consisted of about 5 bouts, but all in all, a great improvement. And the abdominal pain has settled to a low roar. So as you can see, there is hope. It's not exactly what I was promised, but it's too late for regrets so must learn to make the best of it all.
I can surely understand why you have depression! Why is it some get hit with everything? I was dx with MS in '98. Do you really take all those meds? That is insane. What is it you have in your chest, and why? And are you expecting a baby - is that why you take prenatal vitamins? I am so glad my kids are grown, I wouldn't have the energy at this stage - even tho I'm only 42. How old are you?
Hope I offered you some hope also, since your surgery is newer than mine. I get to see a Dr tomorrow so maybe he can give me some better tips and I'll pass them on if you like.

Thanks for the information. That helps knowing that things will settle down at some time. I know it's not even been three weeks yet since the surgery. My belly is so sore from the incision, did they have to cut you open too.
Yes, I do take all those medications. The prenatal vitamins are for my anemia. I can't have anymore children to hard on my system. I have a portacath in my chest. They are mostly used on Chemo patients, I can't get IV's anymore so I have metal in my chest and a cather that runs into my vena cava vein. That way I can get iv fluids and have blood drawn.
I'm 40 and have a 12 year old at home. My lupus is pretty bad and I'm fightening with them all the time. My blood counts are so low I've received 5 units of blood in the past 8 months. Any tips you can pass on would be great. I'll see my surgeon next Friday. They just keep reminding me that it's a big surgery and you'll take time to heal.
