I'm 43 years old and was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in April of '05. I had previously been diagnosed with Essential Tremors but 1 1/2 years later the same Neurologist changed the diagnosis to P.D. I am still experiencing the tremors with movement as well as a little of the resting tremors. From everything I've found in researching both diseases a patient has one or the other, not both kind of tremors. Does anyone know anything new about this? I told my Neurologist about it and he pretty much blew it off.
Welcome to healing well.I might suggest a second opinion.Although there are many exceptions to pd, and no 2 people have the same symptoms,resting tremors are characteristic of pd.Having said this I often have movement tremors when using my left hand.You did not mention if you have any other symptoms such as walking ,balance,speech or writing problems characteristic of pd.This is a hard disease to DX,and it has symptoms similar to many other diseases.A process of elimination is used thru numerous tests,and the final acid test is answered by this question.Do the Parkinson medications work?if they do it is assumed that you have pd.It never hurts to check in on more then one neurologist ,You did not mention if you are on any meds,and if so are they helping?Ed DX parkinson"s disease 1998

Yes, you're right...I didn't get too much into my treatment plan and other symptoms. I don't have writing problems. My speech will get kind of hoarse sounding at times. When I walk, my left foot will roll toward the outside edge & no real balance issues. My chiropractor & massge therapist have helped with the walking issue. My neurolgist put me on Mirapex and I am currently taking .5 mg 3 times/day. It has made some of the symptoms go away but I still have tremors when I move and have still been taking Endural (.5 mg/1 time per day) for them ever since I was originally diagnosed with "Essential Tremors.
So you're saying that it IS normal to have both kinds of tremors? I am actually thinking about switching neurologists because I am going to be involved in a Parkinson's Study coming up in July. The neurologist conducting the study specializes in Parkinson's Disease.

there is no normal with PD everyone has different symptoms.you say Mirapex helps with some of the symptoms,sounds like Pd.I take Mirapex,along with Stalevo,and they do little to stop my tremors.I would definitely get a second opinion At last count I've seen at least 6 different neurologists.I am currently with one that specializes in movement disorders,and I think he is great.Best to you,and drop by our scheduled chat if you can .Talking on line to those with this disease can provide a lot of info.Ed
