My friend gets heartburn almost every night. He tries to stick to his diet but is only 20 and eats the occasional pizza. Even when he dose eat right it comes back. He chugges maloxx like H20 before after and inbetween meals. Is there anything else he can do? He's on prescription durgs but it seems to only calm it donw a notch in the morning. Please help!!!
With my own experience, I have found that you do have to try to stay on a healthy diet. I would think that pizza would not be on the recommended diet. There are definitely foods that can cause heartburn even in someone who is not inclined to get it and pizza would be one of those foods.
He should probably consult a doctor because he could have acid reflux or a hiatal hernia or perhaps an ulcer, so you really do want to investigate further to be sure. You mentioned that he is on presciption drugs, which ones are they?
I can sympathise with your friend, I to suffer from heartburn, and I know its not a pleasant thing to go through.
Like Ellieyan I agree that it is important to stick to your diet and stay away from the trigger foods, but that isnt always achievable 100% of the time either.
I came across a product on the web, from my country actually, New Zealand called Zylax. I have been taking Zylax for just three weeks now but have already noticed an improvement in my heartburn.
Zylax is a completely natural capsule product, and is based on a digestive enzyme complex extracted from kiwifruit. I have been told that this product works on the basis that ONE of the reasons for dysfunctional digestion issues such as Heartburn or GERD developing is the incomplete break down of the food that we eat.
Zylax therefore they tell me is designed to help ensure that you digest or breakdown the food that you eat properly, which not only means you get maximum benefit from your food, but you help to prevent and treat symptoms of dysfunctional digestion such as heartburn or GERD.
I started off taking two capsules before each meal - and have just recently reduced to just two capsules a day.
I have also noticed that if I take a capsule when I notice a particuarly bad attack of heartburn that I have some relief usually within 30 minutes of taking a capsule.
However it is important to note that this is not a drug, and that results do vary from person to person, but it could be another option to try.
Hi Pansy, Yes that would be me. Except my heavy chest is just chest pain and I have little to no heartburn. I have Ectopic Arrythmia's. I was on Atenlol. And I also have been diagnosed after an upper GI test with GERD. Have you had any tests to confirm if you have GERD? I think that would be very important. It is also important with your symptoms that you visit with a cardiologist and rule out Heart disease. I have done this and now when I have chest pain and arrythmia's I have peace of mind that my heart is OK it is just the GERD acting up. You would be foolish not to go both to a Cardiologist as well as a GI specialist. You need to know for your health as well as your peace of mind.

Hi, everyone, I have suffered from acid reflux for about 9 years now and have gone through Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium. My acid reflux was so bad I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. I did have an endoscopy to check for Barrett's esophagus (which was negative). My medication was switched by my doctor when my insurance company requested it, ie. they dictated what medication my physician was to prescribe for me. I got more than aggravated with that. Anyway, I was able to get off the last of my medication after starting a nutrition supplement. I wasn't sure it would help with acid reflux but I can eat even Mexican food (my favorite) without any kind of heartburn and I don't have to take medication. I am sure the insurance company would have eventually told me to take the OTC medication so they wouldn't have to pay for it, so I am glad I can survive comfortably without any of the medications. For me, the nutritional supplement was the key. I don't have to watch my diet or what I eat anymore. I can eat anything without any problems.
Idora98, I have had gi problems for a long time also. And lately even nexium and reglin are not really helping me. I still get the bloating, gas pain, discomfort. Nexium used to work great! Do you have any idea why it would stop being as effective? Or could this be a bad flare up? What happened with you..was Nexium working and then it didn't anymore? Lori
I think I can help your friend. I used to suffer the exact same symptoms. It's the carbs in pizza that is giving your friend a bad time. Once following my diet, your friend can have occasional pizza (considered minor cheating) without concequence, as long as overall, your friend is sticking to my diet plan aimed directly at treating heartburn.
Good Luck,
Norm
