2022 Drugs for Prostate Cancer

Abbreviations
LHRH - luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone
GnRH - gonadotropin-releasing hormone
LHRH/GnRH – terms are used interchangeably
PARP – poly-ADP ribose polymerase

Definitions
LHRH/GnRH Agonists – Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonists are drugs that lower the amount of testosterone made by the testicles. When patients receive an LHRH agonist for the first time, they may experience a phenomenon called "testosterone flare."

LHRH/GnRH Antagonists – These drugs work in a slightly different way from LHRH/GnRH agonists and lower testosterone more quickly. Unlike LHRH agonists, LHRH antagonists do not cause a testosterone flare.

Androgen Receptor Inhibitors (androgen blockers or anti-androgens) - Androgen receptor inhibitors block testosterone from binding to “androgen receptors” which stops testosterone from working with the cancer. There are 1st and 2nd generation drugs. These drugs can be given for a few weeks when starting treatment with LHRH agonists to help prevent testosterone flare.

Androgen Synthesis Inhibitors – Drugs that target other sources of testosterone and androgens in the body such as adrenal glands.

Chemotherapy – Anti-cancer drugs injected into a vein or orally that travel through bloodstream to reach cancer cells and interfere with cell division. Affects other cells as well.

Targeted Therapy – Drugs such as PARP inhibitors/blocker that identify and target cancer cells and stop them from growing and spreading.

Immunotherapy – Drugs designed to boost the body’s immune system to stimulate immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively.

Radiopharmaceutical Therapy - Delivery of radioactive substance directly to cancer cells through the blood.
