I have never heard of anyone that had it as their first symptom.
Sigmoid Colostomy / Crohns / Type 1 Diabetic / Ostioarthritus / Fibromyalgia / Asthma / High Blood Pressure / High Colesterol / Migraines. Ain't life a joy?
* I think it may be time for a colorful metaphor*
The presenting symptoms of diabetes used to be the "classical triad",but is not seen as fequently as before.Nowadays people have complaints like undue fatigue, excessive weight loss etc.
Were you going in for routine blood tests or did anything specific prompted you to go in for these tests?
The coventional wisdom is people spend a considerable amount of time in the "pre-diabetes" stage(sometimes even upto 9 years) before they become frank diabetics.
There are various causes of tingling and numbness in the feet and diabetes is only one of them.
My 2 cents worth of advise is not to jump the gun,but to calmly wait for the results to come in!Hope you'll keep us posted.

Mary,
When I was first dx'd with diabetes type 2 back in 1976, I don't remember having pins and needles at that time. But shortly afterwards I do remember having them in my hands, but I don't know if I had them in my feet, I don't think I did.
Back in those days getting a meter was unheard of and one had to test their urine.
It wasn't until 1989, I got my first meter, which cost a fortune (One Touch) and had to buy strips out of my pocket. Ever since 1989, I have been under control since I knew what my sugar readings were. But by that time, I already had the start of gastroparesis and neuropathy of the feet.
Mine was caught during a urinalysis for a UTI and they found sugar in my urine.
I'm glad you are getting checked. Hope everything goes well. Don't know why they didn't do a sugar check in the office there instead of making you wait for the lab tests to come back.
Good luck!
Hugs,
Faye
Hypothyroidism (1958), Diabetes type 2 (1976), Hypercholesterolemia (1989), Gastroparesis (1990), FMS (1995), and GERD (2006).
And I sort of wondered the same thing, Faye...lol. I thought that much could be done fairly quickly, but I won't argue with the results. I guess I listened to too many people and got myself a bit worried.
Good luck to everyone and much much good health. =)
