Wake up chocking, please help!

Hi, I'm Candy and I wanted to see if anyone has had the same symptoms that I have had. In the middle of a deep sleep, I wake up with stomach acid down my windpipe. I can not breath and I gasp for air. This is one of the scarriest things that ever happened to me. I really feel like I might die when this happens. Can anyone relate to this and does anyone have any suggestions?
There are links between GERD, asthma, sleep apnea and snoring. You might want to make an appointment and talk to your doctor about this. I would start a food diary to see which foods might be the culprits, also.

Are you married? Could you ask your parner about how you sleep? Do you take any meds at bedtime? Do you have any large stresses just now? Do you have any type of exercise routine? Just trying to help here.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Candy,

What you are describing sounds like aspiration, and is not a very good symptom to have.  I would recommend that you follow up with your GI doctor.  My  mom had severe reflux, and she used to have this problem.  The danger is that the acid can travel down your windpipe while and can literally choke you to death.  My mom was advised to sleep with her head majorly elevated--she slept sitting straight up at one time.  I've also had this symptom before, especially when I was pregnant.  After I had my babies, my doctor started me on REglan.  This drug closed my LES (lower esophagael sphincter) so that acid could not travel up my esophagus at all.  Combined with PPI's and acid blockers, my symptoms are rather well-controlled.
