What do you eat for breakfast

I messed up and ate a bowl of little mini wheats (w.frosting) this morning, went up to 200! Little bit later I was down ok, but gee that scared me. What do you guys eat, other than cereal , eggs, etc.?? I had a little big of shrimp in garlic butter w/broccoli, and wheat bread for lunch, and I tested 91, now that made me happy!!
I typically make various kinds of muffins using soy flour instead of regular flour. If you go the food network website and search for George Stella, he has a bunch of low carb recipes that all taste really great! He doesn't worry about fat content, though, so you might want to consider making lower fat substitutions. For example, the muffins call for heavy whipping cream and eggs. Instead I use fat-free low carb milk and egg substitute and they still come out great (though the soy flour does have a different taste that you kind of have to get used to). If you decide to try the muffins, be warned that they stick like no other! I've found that the best thing to do is just skip his steps about lcoating the tins in flour and bran and instead use those paper linings. And if you wait until the muffins are all the way cool, they usually come out of the paper pretty well. I like an English muffin, toasted with a small bit of real butter, coffee, and some fruit and milk. I also like oatmeal with peanut butter in it. The frosting was the problem with the cereal... Just try regular miniwheats and use sweetener or just plain with skim milk. I like to have a bit of butter or peanut butter to keep my fats in line or I get hungry real soon.

I'm finding that just about any cereal makes my bs go up. Had a bowl of cheerios this morning, it went up, 160's. oh my.
I have eaten the same breakfast (almost) for the last five yrs. Bran cereal w/ fruit and decaf coffee.
Usually it is 12 oz V8 juice, and a piece of fruit, apples mostly.
On my "I am gonna treat myself days" it is a small serving of hashbrowns, 1 - 2 eggs, and 2 slices of turkey bacon. But these are maybe once a week.
I run control on my BG 6 days a week and one day I treat myself as a reward. my last hba1c was 6.5 so it is working for me.

Oh, AL, that "treat myself" breakfast sounds delicious! Haven't had time for something like that in a while and the potatoes would send my sugars thru the roof for me! Anyway, YUM!

I've only been diagnosed for about 6 weeks. (Type 2) The diet my doctor put me on has no milk for breakfast. (Boy, I was always a cereal eater!) I get one fruit, one meat, one bread and one fat exchange. Since my cholesterol is 220 (still too high) I avoid eggs. My exchange list shows 2 tablespoons of peanut butter as a meat substitute. OK, so that's "breakfasty" right?

So I spread a thin layer of peanut butter on 4 squares of graham crackers and put slices of banana on top of the peanut butter. There's my bread, meat, and fruit! Yummy.

I add a powdered creamer to my coffee to get the fat exchange.

A couple of weeks ago my husband came home from the grocery store with a half gallon container of sugar free, fat free ice cream. The brand name was either Breyers or Dreyers. A half-cup serving had only 100 calories, yet it contained SIX grams of fiber! Now that's a good product! Tasted great, too.

Well I was a bagel and black coffee for breakfast and the carbs in the bagel would play havoc with my BS. Now I eat when I get to work and the deli downs stairs makes me scrambled eggs and bacon for a couple of bucks and WOW... My BS level has been just great. Not a low Cholesterol breakfast, but it doesn't move my BS one inch!!

(Actually as a Byetta user, that breakfast LOWERS by BS from my fasting BS level, so Im sticking with it. Thanks to Jeannie who alerted me to how carb loaded my single bagel was)
I'm into the hot cereals for a couple of reasons. The fiber is great for jump-starting my metabolism, and is supposed to assist in lowering BS, plus it definitely satisfies the hunger. I use splenda to sweeten it, or throw in some frozen tropical fruit to give it a little flavor too. I might have to try the peanut butter idea.

This week I'm on Quaker Multi-Grain cereal. it's definitely a wheatier (is that a word?) taste, but I like it.

As a follow on, what do you eat for lunch?  I'm in an office during the day and am finding it difficult with food (i.e. very bored of the same old stuff and letting my diet slip a bit).  I've got an appointment with a dietician next week but some ideas in the meantime would be great! :-)

A bunch of us that take morning and evening meds would have afternoon "spikes" because of our lunch, me included. Thanks to help from some members here about the carb values in certain things I ate for lunch I am down to a salad for lunch.

What I do is either make ahead of time or buy a salad with at least 3 different colors of "stuff" in it. Then I get one of those "rotisserie" chickens at the grocery store and bring the cut up chicken in a plastic container so I can throw it into my salad. This lunch really doesn't move my blood sugar much at all and really leaves me as satisfied as my high carb lunches did. (and if you eat a BIG salad, you will need a lot less for dinner)

And I keep no carb no sugar jello in the fridge at work so that when I get the munchies I've got a snack that also won't move my BS but you can learn to love over time!
I must admit that in the beginning I too was eating a lot of cereal just by it self & my breakfast reading WAS HIGH until I tried something & that was to eat some PROTEIN before I had my cereal in other words try having some protein before you have your cereal. Here's some ideas of what I would have & I still do this today & since I made the change my NUMBERS have gone done !!

2 slices of bacon

2 scrambled eggs

1 cup of cheerios w/ 1/2 cup milk & no sugar

OR

1 cup cottage cheese w/ 2 TBLSP. chopped nuts ( any kind )

1/2 cup cheerios w/ 1/4 cup milk no sugar

So, give this a try and see what happens & I can share some more ideas with you for breakfast ideas & some extra helps too. And, I have picked up a lot of things over the last few years ...

I note ... just eat your PROTEIN FIRST then have your cereal !! Good luck and let me know what happens ok ??
I eat a packet of oatmeal with a little cinnamon and butter. I just can't take eggs for breakfast everyday. I eat them on the weekend with either sausage or bacon. Sometimes I have half a cup of cereal with a splash of milk and berries but the cereal has to be high fiber.

I've also recently discovered that eating protein with carbs lowers the post prandial reading so I eat a sandwich for lunch. Tuna, chicken or that thin deli ham, (That stuff is delish!)

Dinner is a very small amount of carb with a lot of protein and some veggies. about a quarter of an apple before bed keeps my fbg down in the morning. I think I have it right for me, for now.
Try taking resveratrol before you have breakfast. Resveratrol is found in red win and grapes skin. There are some stable Resveratrol supps available... When taken about 20 - 30 minutes before having food it helps keep your glucose levels more stable and will be lower. Try it when you can and you will see a difference in your readings.  I believe it might block some of the uptake of glucose in the gut. Although this doesn't allow you to go crazy and eat what you want... It will lower your readings somewhat.

I don't believe Reversatrol has any effect whatsoever on blood sugar.  From everything I've read, it is a powerful antioxident and is most comonly used  adjuctively for people with Heart Disease and Cancer.  The only mention I've been able to find about a direct link to diabetes, is that it mitigates some neuropathy in rats.

I'd be open to any studies that show that grapeseed extract (Reversatrol) either stimulates insulin release by the pancreas or increases sensativity to insulin.

Alright Warren, I'll have a look and see what I can find after work.

Rice or applesauce lately. I'm dreaming of an omelette though. :P
Amanda,

Eat the omelette! Make it with two eggs and toss one of the yolks. This would be much easier on your blood sugar than rice and more helpful than applesauce alone. A little bit of cheese and some thin deli ham, mmmmmmmmm! Pop a slice of whole grain bread in the toaster and slice up a small orange and you're having yourself a feast! Now that's a healthy breakfast that is nutritionally sound and makes you feel great. Or make some oatmeal with cinnamon in the microwave. I substitute milk for the water and then it's high in calcium for my osteoporosis problem. Yum! I gotta stop... I'm getting hungry. tongue

Here is 2 two graphs from a powerpoint file that was used at the CR 3 Conference. Paul monitored his glucose levels after consuming large meals, so it's not a huge large scale study... but it doesn't need to be. The results he gets by taking resveratrol is consistant, aswell as for athoer people doing CR.

You obviously are gonna have to take my word for it now because this is obviously not good enough to support the claims but it also wont hurt trying resveratrol will it?. I can send you the powerpoint presentation if you like, it's 13MB.

I suppose that you all know that Green Tea is great for trying to control diabetes?

Read below:

Green tea intervention can significantly decrease visceral fat depot and increase the insulin's sensitivity.

Metabolic Syndrome X, also known as Insulin Resistance Syndrome, is thought to run in families with a history of type 2 diabetes. Excessive caloric intake is thought to be one of the root causes. Consequently, physicians have prescribed weight loss, exercise and a healthy diet to combat it. A new weapon might eventually be added to the arsenal: consumption of green tea, a tea polyphenols product containing in excess of 65 percent tea catechins, derived from the green tea leaf. The results of a new animal model study reveal the benefits of green tea in improving lipid and glucose metabolisms, enhancing insulin sensitivity, and balancing the metabolic rate of fat deposit and fat burning.
