What if you need antibiotics and NSAIDS?

Hi all,
I recently had a knee arthroscopy for a torn meniscus and arthritis.  I am at a real disadvantage with GERD and IBS, in that I really need to avoid antibiotics and NSAIDS.  I have been in so much pain, because I can't take the NSAIDS.  The surgeon allowed me to not take the post-surgery antibiotics, since they are more-or-less over-kill......for which I was grateful.
On 3 days, I took pepcid, and then I took an Aleve, and I really started getting heartburn and esophogeal spasms.  It's a real bummer.
How do you all handle surgery/illnesses that really require antibiotics and NSAIDS?  How do you deal with the pain, diarrhea, reflux, etc. that comes with both of these medications?
I was lucky that my doctor actually was concerned about my GERD, and didn't force these meds on me.
But he did say that if I ever needed a knee replacement, the antibiotics are very important.
Antibiotics and NSAIDS really mess up my GI tract for a long time.   Just curious how you all deal with these meds.  Thanks!
Cathy, I am really sorry about your difficulty. I pray that you have a speedy recovery. Do you take a little food with your NSAIDS? What do you think about trying probiotics at least when you need to take antibiotics. ? It might help with some of your symptoms. ??? I'm just trying to throw some ideas out there. I hope someone with more knowledge and experience can give you some more helpful thoughts!
Tylenol is the only resort for us, I am afraid. It does work but seems to be much slower for me. Maybe up your dose of Elavil. There are antidepressants such as effortex or something like that to take for pain. There are drugs for neuropathy too which are not NSAIDs.

My medical spelling is terrible. Look up antidepressants for those with agitated symptoms on the web. These should be short term though. Bless you.
Cathy,
I have been on Diclofenac since 1997 and I take Cytotec along with it once a day. It doesn't seem to upset my GERD any. I take the NSAID for FMS pain as it really helps me so much.

My endo just took me off the WelChol today so I won't have to go through the pain tonight and maybe I'll get to sleep some.

I was on Keflex not long ago and tolerated that pretty well.

I am on Nexium 40 mg. but due to some side effects I would like to try Protonix.

Hugs,
Faye
