I have had my colostomy since Jan. I was told that some mucous coming out the rectum was normal. I am having mucous several times a day and it has blood in it. Then occasionally I look and the water is real cloudy. On the TP was some yellow looking crud. Today I'm having a little bit of an ache in the rectum. I do have a fistula there. This is not severe pain like I have had before with it. any ideas? Do you all have mucous like this?
If I can be different I usually am! This is making me a little uneasy tho. Any help would be appreciated!

I did have some before they removed my rectum, et all. They say it is normal, but if you are having alot it doesn't hurt to make the call to the doc and ask them.
After mine was removed I developed an abcess and was really gushing out the yucky stuff until they went back in and removed the abcess.

I ended up at the Gi's yesterday. I am told I have "diversion colitis". Yay it has a name! Seems our rectums need the fatty acids that pass thru with a BM. Apparently my rear is objecting to not getting that. I read it will prob go away upon reconnection.
I had the surgery cause they said my butt needed a break. Now I have another condition from giving it a break. What part of all this makes a bit of sense?

Ha,well thats about right isnt it?
I have that expelling mucous all the time, cuz i still have intestine hooked up, since i have a j-pouch everything is small intestine though..no colon or rectum involved anymore! But occasionally food gets past my ostomy and then the mucous gets thicker and hard to pass, and BOY does that hurt the bum when you have staples and stitches galore...ouch!

Diversion colitis is pretty common with a bypassed tract of bowel. I use Predsol (prednisolone suppositories) to help. You can also get short chain fatty acid enemas to help it.
