Working or Disability

Just  wondering although I am sure everyone is different.  How do (or did) you decide that you were not able to work anymore  and was this supported by your Dr.s

I am 51 and currently still working full time. No one at my place of employment know that I have PD although many have made reference to my inability to write or my balance and walking problems.
There are times that I feel I would go nuts if I didn't work, but on the other hand there are times when I know that my work suffers because of my exhaustion and decreasing ability to concentrate and stay focused.
I also struggle because I want to eat right, get my proper rest, reduce stress and exercise well to alliviate the symptoms as long as possible. Working full time and commuting 1 hour each way really limits the time to focus on staying well, if that makes any sense.
My company has disability insurance so that should not be a problem as long as the right forms are filled out, but the biggest question is When.

I guess I'll know if and when the time comes but would sure appreciate hearing from others that perhaps have gone through this decison process themselves ?

Thanks

Welcome to Healing well,I just recently applied for social security disability. This decision became easier as it was forced on me by pd.I will continue to work part time (about 10 hrs a week)as that is all I can manage. My philosophy was to work as long as I could, and I did.No regrets. This disease decides for us but not without a good fight back. Now Im getting my fishing gear ready for spring.Glad you found us stay well, and remember the light is always on at Healing well.Ed

Ed-Diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1998.I am also Diabetic, and have major arthritis issues. As long as I can fish life is good.

I am also 51 and still in the early stages of PD.  I work as a clinical research nurse in a very fast paced setting caring for cardiac patients in the catheterization lab.  Needless to say the demands of my current job are at odds with many of my current PD symptoms.  I have been very open at work regarding my condition and so far everyone is very supportive. There really isn't anything I can't do right now, but it's not easy and I also wonder about the job stress and it's impact on my disease progression.

For now I have decided that I will continue to work as long as I can physically and mentally do my job.  I very much enjoy what I do and believe that the positive aspects of working including social interaction, and continue to give meaning and structure to my days. I also want to have "plan B" firmly in mind for when I can't do nursing.  Whatever my future limitations I know that I will want to be as active and involved as I can!

Good Luck as you make your decision!
