When things feel overwhelming or confrontational with someone I care about, I zone out. I mean I go numb like someone else steps in for me. For a variety of reasons I have done this all my life. Whats creepy is that lately, I am aware that "someone steps in".
So you are probably saying get to a physician real quick. But I function well on a daily basis. I am leary of the side effects of meds. I guess I just feel the need to actually give voice to what I am experiencing.
I have been on anti- depressants. Paxil and Zoloft. Paxil was actually for depression and Zoloft was related to panic attacks and a minor heart condition. I realize this is a defense mechanism for me. But I never hear anyone speak of such things.
I actually zone out too when I am completely overwhelmed. I become paralyzed and I feel like I'm trapped and can't get any words out to express how I'm feeling because I basically completly shutdown and block everyone out from the outside world. This usually happens alot at school when i have alot of homework I have to complete. Thius also occured when my family was going through a rough time. Anyway I'm still trying to learn more about it. maybe we could help eachother out....

sometimes i zone out when i'm driving and i have a passenger and i'm buesy talking with him, or when i am thinking very hard i seem to not be aware that i am driving, i don't know if this is the same or not. some times when we are in conversation with a group of people i stay silent and thinking as if i was not there. To be or not to Be
Hi 2yinerous, I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you to Healing Well forum. We are glad to have you.
What you describe sounds like anxiety. People who suffer from anxiety often do have feelings of disassociation. It sometimes happens to me when I am overwhelmed or there is too much stimuli going on. You may not be getting to a full blown panic state but your body is still reacting as if this is occurring. You try some deep breathing exercises when this happens. Take care ~ Elisha
