Sure hope your feeling better by now, only thing I can think up is make sure your
getting enough water for you as it can break up the mucus and mucinex can also help.
Hope this info helps..
Good luck in what you choose to do...

Drink water.....lots of water....and remember green while a beautiful color is not a good color or phlegm.
Hi Lynne & Everyone
Pint of salt water & slurp working very well so far - 3 days. Also cutting out cream doughnuts ice cream etc helping.
Back in the Forties on this side of the pond, my mum used a glass "duck" gizmo with salt water down our noses which I'd forgotten all about.
Time to do it again!
Thanks again Lynne

I'm a fit 40-odd guy, who for years has been following anti-allergy diets, but nonetheless suffered from excess phlegm for years.
Each year it progressively got worse and became really, really annoying. Whenever a flu came around, I would get pummelled by the flu, suffering incredible congestion for days/weeks.
I tried anti-dust mite covers, humidifiers, and diets but never even got close to ridding it.
Then one day I came across a quote online from someone who mentioned acidity can cause mucus.
Plink went a lightbulb, suddenly remembering that I've been taking enzyme digestors for about 10 years (for better protein absorption). One of the components in them was HCL (which I "believe" is hydrochloric acid).
I stopped taking those digestors. Within days I noticed a dramatic improvement in my congestion.
That was about three months ago.
I've since noticed some sites which suggested various foods cause acidity in the body. Some said it was the foodstuffs themselves (eg. a lemon was acidic, therefore likely to increase acidity), while some other sites said it was the effect of the foodstuffs (eg. a lemon, while acidic, may actually increase PH levels in the body).
I'm still experimenting with those concepts, but I can happily report I'm "relatively" congestion free these days, while taking notes of the effects of those "acidic" foods.
To give you an idea of how good I feel, on a scale of one to ten, I felt afflicted like an 8 or 9 in the bad old days, but these days I'm about a 1 or 2.
Huge improvement.
I apologise that the above is not grounded in scientific research & testing, but that's what did it for me. I hope it helps some of you in your own search.
Now, if only I can find the secret to perpetual energy...sigh..

Hi everyone. I'm writing this while coughing my lungs out from Post nasel drip...oh joy. This time began in the last week of Feb.. I steam every day many times and can become almost human during the day BUT nighttime is another matter. I haven't slept more than an hour at a time since my sinuses started their over-production.
They seem to be my weakest link ie: all colds begin there. Of course all allergic reactions are there and all infections seem to start there. It's a busy place. I drink lots of water.
I used to start coughing 2 weeks after my furnace would kick-in when winter came. So I had all ducts cleaned and sprayed with anti-bacterial stuff. It worked...now my coughing began just before spring so I figure pollen! Antibiotics (Cefprozil) for bacteria didn't work. Doc told me to get Benlyn DMDE...it has an effect...unlasting.
I am interested in a couple of suggestions here...(although all are good)...Snowylynne could you please spell the rest of the word 'cipro...' I have had a few perscriptions with those letters. Thanks.
And Naturalhealth...how much is a shot of apple cider vinegar. I went to the bottle right away and took a slug...maybe a tbsp. and will do it again later but want to take the right amount.
And Dencha, I've written down your solution because I think I can snort liquid out of my hand better than using a straw or Nepi... and Groovy, I've written down your onion recipe (both) and plan on trying it too.
So...I'm all set!
Because of my susception to colds I have had a 5 year pneumonia shot and all the flu shots offered so at least a cold won't turn into pneumonia and we'll see re: the flu.
This is a great website with current postings and a lively group.
My contribution is...try not to breathe! Ha.
Actually surprisingly, all citrus juices cause thicker mucus as does milk and other dairy like yogurt. I sometimes eat a pickle to get the vinegar mixture and it helps. Any sugar and chocolate increases thick saliva and nasel goop. Stick to clear, watery soups, a few soda crackers with, have been ok for me and salads with vinegar dressing doesn't aggravate either. Tea is better than coffee. And Steam yourself at least twice a day with eucaliptus (spelling?) drops in the water. And last but not least...buy Kleenex and Depends by the case. All my coughing makes me 100% incontinent until I clear up my sinuses.
Thanks folks
But life is good isn't it???

I kept getting post nasal drip (I thought) but it turned out it was acid reflux eating into my sinuses.
Have you been checked to see if you have what's called silent GERD? Sometimes you feel like you're going to cough your head off. There's gunk in your throat all the time. Sometimes you cough up white or clear foam. If this is happening to you, go see a GI.

Hi, I also have over-production of phlegm due to a recently developed food allergy. Still being tested on what the cause is (could be glycerin or gelatin or something in the process of making those things) and I was at the point that I don't even want try new restaurants as I might end up coughing. I also relate to the waking up every night around 2am to hack and cough to clear the phlegm out. I just HATE the tickle of mucus moving back and forth just by needing to BREATHE, and it makes me cough so much that I need to wear diapers because of all the spurting (common woman's problem but really severe in my case).
Now I grew up in the States, but my husband is from Singapore, so when we visited his relatives over there, I found out more about Chinese medicine. Went to see a sensei (Chinese doctor) and got a very common, actually cheap medicine called San She Dan Chuan Bei Powder, which is 33.4% Tendrilleaf Fritillary and 66.6% 3 kinds of snake gall (Pytos Korr, Bungarus Fasciatus and Elaph Rediata). It is a powder wrapped in paper and the paper is sealed inside a small glass tube packaged in a paper container labeled San She Dan Chuan Bei Mo. After breaking the glass tube inside the paper container by tapping it with something heavy, you can take the paper out, cut it and shake the powder into a cup. The powder is mixed with some boiled water for you to drink. Two doses a day. It DOES suppress my phlegm production and doesn't taste like anything much, so don't worry.
I had worried I wouldn't find it where I live, Seattle, but we have a Chinatown/International District and I was easily able to find it after I got back. A package of 10 tubes was only $5!
Chinese medicine is very, very old and based on herbs and natural ingredients, so it has less side effects. I was on ASMANEX and ProAir at the time I tried it, and did not have any issues at all. This San She Dan Chuan Bei powder DOES work for me, and it has been in Asia for a long time. If you're close to a Chinatown/International District, go get it. It's given me real relief by significantly suppressing my mucus production and I hope it will do so for you all. You can google it for more info.

I can't believe no one has told you why you have excess phlegm. You have Candida, an overgrowth. Especially taking all those antibiotics and drugs, your body is ridden with fungus and is producing phlegm to get rid of it. That's what indulgence in modern drug medicine gets you.
Skybyrd....it's possible it can be a yeast overgrowth but no one can tell a person for sure that is what they have unless it is that person's doctor. And why no one here has told them.....well because we are not doctors. We are support forum. We can only offer suggestions. There can be more then one reason a person has excessive phlegm production.

i read an entire book about this...when you have excessive gunk that is your lymph nodes coming to the rescue to fight an infection. get it out of your body. it is ugly and that's for sure this book was written by a doctor i have felt like i could make a small pond with my gunk...hang in there
YOU MUST MAKE SURE YOUR LUNGS ARE CLEAR...ONLY A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL CAN TELL YOU THAT. if they are not clear you may have to take an inhaler. hope you feel better

I have read all your posts. I have been through it all with adult-onset allergies....biggest problem was mucous. Let's just say I was so TIIIIRED of it all. I should have bought stock in Kleenex.
The solution that has had me running my own life with no or very minimal snot: I tried everything non-medication but this is the only thing that's worked:
Zyrtec or Zyrtec-D daily (indoor and outdoor allergies) and the D for days I feel sinus congestion although I have been headache free for 3 years now.
Nasal washes twice daily (I use Neil-Med from CVS)
Fluticasone Nasal spray twice a day
For reducing snot production in the lungs: Advair inhaler every day (also prescribed commonly for COPD), and Zyflo (Pill) (inhibits snot production everywhere in the body)
That's about it. Good luck

I also suffer from COPD and now enduring Bronchittis. Other than prescription steroids and antibiotics, the best home remedy is to avoid all Dairy, salt, sugar, caffiene and cold beverages for they thicken phlegm. The best home remedy that works for me beside my prescription antiobiotics and steroids is to drink a full glass of water at room temperature as frequently as you can (at least every two hours). I said room temperature for cold beverages will thicken phlegm. Good Luck!
not sure if anyone mentioned this but excess mucus like that could be due to dairy. there are certain foods which are known to increase mucus production in body. i would look more into what those are and try eliminating them for a week or two and see if you notice an improvement
I too have asthma, allergies, food intolerances, and the rest.
I've done a lot of research. The mucous drives me up the wall. How can you date someone when you need to spit out the contents of your sinuses all the time, right?!
One thing that helped me HUGLEY: acknowledging my intolerances.
The modern world is taken for granted - we all assume everything around us is normal. It ain't.
Dairy is a monster mucous maker, for a reason: its' not designed for adult humans to drink. Once we reach the age of 7, we no longer need milk. It's designed for baby cows. And it doesn't just cause mucous and make you fat (milk is made up of fat cells), but it makes cancer grow (because it's also natural growth hormones, to make baby cows grow). Ditch the dairy. It's a cruel industry. Don't take my word for it - do some Googling.
Also, look at gluten. Did your ancestors come from a land where they ate wheat products? Probably not, or not for long enough to produce the required enzymes. Gluten is a beast responsible for countless maladies. I cut it out, and my mucous production shrank.
Be a detective - doctors are lazy and don't care (unless you're lucky and find the rare one that does, but even then their training can restrict their thinking). Look outside of medicinal western medicine. These medicines you're forcing into your body are bullying some of the symptoms away, but you're never discovering what's really causing it, and what other damage is occurring as a result.
We are the luckiest generations now- we have the internet, we can research like crazy. We can choose to keep dust out of our homes, not eat foods that put our bodies into crisis mode, be physically active, syringe with salt water (I find this better than a neti pot which kept trapping water inside my inner ear - not good).
Go for a walk or a run. Does your nose run? Does the mucous try to escape? Then your house may be making you sick.
Forget the sodas, they cause mucous too. You're drinking a chemical bath. Love on the fruit instead - we're actually DESIGNED to process that stuff!
Much love, and I hope we all find the light at the end of our congested tunnels.
xx

Was the Neti Pot mentioned at all? It's made by Neilmed and is used to flush out sinuses.
I use it at the first sign of a cold or even a morning (stuffy) headache. Instructions say to always use pre-boiled water with salt mixture that comes in packets. It looks like a small teapot. You lean over the sink and pour contents into one nostril and it drains out the other. I find it very effective.
They often have free sample offers on the Neilmed Facebook website for new customers.
Female, Pat
Diagnosed UC 2002, Colazal generic (balsalazide), Mesalamine and/or Colocort enemas as needed. Probiotics, vitamins, slippery elm bark and about to try LDN.
Working toward a more organic, healthy diet.
Love to travel, prefer cruises.

about slowing or stopping mucus. I have COPD and as mention before have the problem with mucus, almost as if I'm suffocating or drowning from the mucus coating or pooling in my lungs. Prednisone is the only thing the doctor has giving me that truly works for clearing my lungs but as most of you know they hate to give it because of the side effects.
Now for the good stuff.
I have not researched long term effects but I have had great success using Mucinex and/or Robitussin - MD. Please before you run out and buy a bottle read the following link thoroughly as there are some don'ts listed. http://www.drugs.com/mtm/robitussin-dm.html

Here are some interesting facts:
The people who work in the Himalayan salt mines rarely ever have a respiratory illness. Needless to say, it's the minerals and trace minerals in unrefined salt that keep the nasal passages, the sinuses, the bronchi and the lungs clear of mucous.
There are two types which may be purchased easily at some grocery stores: Himalayan salt (which I prefer) and French unrefined salt. Both are very effective in clearing mucous.
It takes about 2 1/2 weeks for the full effects to be stabilized, but the rewards are superior. It begins to clear within a couple of days, but is completely gone by the end of 3 weeks.
Milk products are notorious as some have pointed out for creating mucous.
I would consider stopping the use of refined salt and turning to unrefined salt for the benefit of its trace minerals, as well as the other minerals provided in abundance by the salt.
Many researchers and doctors are advising patients to switch to these unrefined forms of salt because of the many benefits provided.
Please Google a website called health benefits of sea salt. There

Hi Dee,
My name is bill and I too have COPD. there was a time I would produce about at least a half cup of sputum a day and felt like I would drown at times, along with getting migrains coughing. Without going into a long history of my ailment, I have found a way to almost completely eliminate this sputum....you may think it crazy, but knowing what your going through you probably will give it a try....
3 tblsp of apple cider vinegar (must include the mother on the lable) into (1) 20 oz bottle of SOBE Lifewater
B-Energy drink....(0 cal and plenty of needed vitamins)...(purchased at any walmart, both ACV w/Mother & Sobe Lifewater) remove 4 oz of Lifewater from SOBE bottle, into a seperate glass and save.....once you remove 4 oz then you will have room to pour in 4-5 oz of Welches Grape Juice for flavor into the SOBE bottle.
in a seperate large glass mix the 4 oz of sobe lifewater that you removed earlier and mix together with the Sobe in the 20 oz bottle....once thourgly mixed drink four oz and save the rest in the frig....through out the day finish off the 20 oz bottle in the frig.... you will not taste the ACV and you will only be adding about 40-50 cal to the mix by using grape juice....it really tastes good and within abnout 5-7 days you will reap the benefit of your new found mixture...it costs about a dollar a day but really worth every penny.....If you have any questions contact me at GABILLH@AOL.COM

HI! What has worked for me to control the mucous is neti pot. Using it only on good morning(empty stomach) and not the mornings when I am very congested. It is easy to use once you know the tricks. Keep the water luke warm. Using the store bought pot gets the instructions and the salt sample to start with Make your own salt mixture with 1 part baking powder and 3 part salt. Do Neti on average days, and pass on days when the nasal passage is irritated.
Also not everyone can do Neti, for eg. my 8 years old. I use coconut oil for oil pulling in the morning(empty stomach). Swirl 1tsp of oil in mouth for 5-10 minutes and discard and brush like you normally do.
Using extra Virgin coconut oil is good. Do this regularly in morning only.
Thank you.

I say that the best idea is to DRINK WATER and other fluids constantly or as often as possible. The water is the best thing to weaken the phlemn to make it come out easier. But you can have other liquids like tea, selzter, fruit juice, coffee, etc. I am a big milk drinker and have no extra phlemn from that.
If you are sensitive to some liquid...like soda or milk or certain fruit juice you should stay away from it. I firmly believe in WATER.
I am WATER WOMAN and wish all the best of everything.
