Have you ever been on effexor? My doctor recently suggested coming off effexor and going onto Mirtazapine. Apparently Mirtazapine is much better for sleep than effexor. I am really struggling with the sleep issue on 150mg effexor XL. Any advise on starting this new drug? Do I have to come off effexor totally before I can change to Mirtazapine?
Thanks,
Twopeople
Hi twopeople, I just wanted to let you know that Jim hasnt posted in quite sometime...this thread here is from last year so I dont know if he will reply to your post or not. I did want to weigh in on this though as I take Effexor and I have to take it in the morning or else I wouldnt be able to sleep at night...it gives me quite a boost of energy. I havent ever heard of Effexor being prescribed to help with sleep in combination with depression...that is odd.
I was prescribed Mirtazapine (Remeron) several years ago and was told by my doc to take it before bed as it would help for sleeping. It pretty much knocked me out flat within 15 minutes of taking it. I am pretty sensitive to medications . Anyway, Remeron didnt work out so well for me so I did end up going off of it and switching to something else. But, it is really good for people who have sleep issues and is an effective treatment for depression.
Good luck with the switch if you do decide to go for it...
Thank you for responding. When I said my doctor was considering changing me from Effexor to Mirtazapine to help sleep I meant that he thought I would sleep without sleeping tablets. I am currently on 150mg effexor which I take in the morning and just cannot sleep without a dalmane sleeping tablet at night. By changing to Mirtazapine I should be able to cut out the sleeping tablets altogether. I actually sleep very well using the dalmane and wake up refreshed but I suppose it is not good to be on sleeping tablets for ever!
Have you problems with sleep while taking effexor? Any tips gratefully received.
I have been taking Effexor for about 5 years now. I take it in the morning, and have no problem sleeping or falling asleep. In fact I can fall asleep in 5 minutes. ( Angers my wife as she takes an hour to get to sleep)
I take Wellbutrin too, so I really can't say what the cause and effects are. These are the only two medications I take. I still have serious bouts of depression though. They usually last 6 or 8 weeks. I cope because I know I will come out of it. Don't want to change anything or increaase dossages as I'm worried I could get worse. I'm just over a 6 week period of that old feeling of being worthless and tired all the time.
But now the Sun is out and I feel fine. Go figure.
Glad to hear you have come out the other side again. It is a great feeling isn't it - why can't life be as good as this all the time? Maybe our bouts of depression make us really appreciate the good times that most other people seem to take for granted.
Interesting to hear that the effexor doesn't keep you awake at night. How much do you take. I have always been a fairly bad sleeper. My husband on the other hand would be sleeping as soon as his head hits the pillow
I like the name "Twopeople" It really relates to how different we are in or out of Depression.
I take 75mg Effexor-SR and 175mg Wellbutrin every morning with vitamins. Take vitamins which are expensive, but have been doing it for so long I'm afraid to stop. I'm not sure how this affects me mentally. When you are reasonably healthy you don't want to change much
When I last told my MD I was still having episodes of Depression, he suggested I should have gone to see him. I did not want to change my meds as you never know what effect that might have.
As long as I know I will be better in time, I'll just keep on keeping on.
