Is Carbohydrate Restriction the Ultimate Cure for Acid Reflux?

Jocaste,
Great news that you have had some success! Congrats. Keep at it and see if you can find a substitute for that bread in the morning (like low carb cereal, etc) or consider it a cheat and understand that it contributes to your overall carb count and potentially symptoms.

Merc29,
Thanks for your note. I would have to agree with your son's assessment, but not pyloria per se. You can see some of my other posts for some details on my theory. Great news that your son is better.

On the 25 grams a day. The answer is no, you do not have to stay at that level. After stopping heartburn, you can gradually increase daily carbs. Can't include all the details here, but you get the idea.

Take care,
Dr Norm
jocaste,
Try and stay away from the toast. Also, check the yogurt to be sure it's low carb. Even the flavored low carb (Dannon) is lower than plain yogurt. But the pain (with only splenda added if needed is still pretty low, about 7 grams if I recall). The low carb yogurt is about 4 grams. I am very pleased with your early results. Now lets see about getting rid of those minor symptoms that you had - that twinge. As for the fiber, luckily high fiber foods tend to have few carbs because our body does not breakdown fiber and the microbes have some trouble as well. Most of the fiber foods are fairly inert and you don't have to limit them.

Hi, welcome back Dr. Norm!

Hi jocaste!  That cucumber and I would have had a war lol - but some people tolerate foods that others can't. :)  Try eating something like Kashi cereal for breakfast, that's a very healthy fiber cereal, or something similar and that will help keep your body in sync.

Hershel,
Thanks for your indepth explaination on the Vagal nerve. I will take some time to review.

Norm
Thanks Teri,
Great to be back. The Grand Canyon was a very humbling experience. It's nice to see the big picture once in a while.

Patsprnk,
I love cukes too. They are not too bad, only about 5 grams carbs each. Of course unsweetened pickles are even better. Like grapes that are fermented into wine, cucumbers that are fermented into pickles loose most of the sugar they have to the microbes BEFORE entering your digestive systems. So, like I tell people who love grapes, you can have all the grapes you want in a nice dry wine.

Take care,
Dr Norm
The problem with pickles is they contain a lot of salt, so if any of you are from the heart forum - look out for that! :)

The Grand Canyon, Dr. Norm? Wow, I bet that was great!!

Re the vasovagal response - I've heard of that with PVC's and in connection to the stomach before myself...however, that's way out of my area of expertise. But I would love to hear more re that!

I have cut my carbs to about 50-60grams and I can't believe that I have managed to be not only heartburn free but also free of all the accompanying bloating, burning stomach and combustion in my back.

Thank you so much for the information that this site has given me.I can't tell you what a relief it is to know that there is a way to eat that is pain free and possibly also healing.

I haven't had any alcohol--I like a glass of wine with my dinner...I'll carry on like this until christmas and then give it a try!

I've asked this question somewhere else...but is it possible to still have reflux and not experience heartburn?

Everyday I feel better and better.I've cut out the toast in the morning and now I'm having plain danone yogurt with a tablespoon of seeds and a plum or some blueberries and strawberries. I'm reluctant to use splenda as it's surrounded by controversy.... I'd like to introduce a tablespoon of grain or beans at lunch time soon...just to monitor the effect but in the evening I'll stick to protein and veg.

Thanks again

Lunch has been a salad and veg with protein and the evening meal has followed suit with salad, veg and protein. I had a very rich meal last night --a lamb curry with ground almonds and cream etc...
Jocaste,
Wow, you are really doing well! Great to hear. Most of your foods sound great, just watch the amount of plums, beans and the grain or you might end up having symptoms again. I use splenda reglurly with not ill effects at all. There is a tremendous amount of safety data for this inert sugar derivitive. Perhaps others on this site can comment more. I know there are other posts on this subject. Best of luck in your continued success.

In answer to your question 'why do low carb diets help HB' I am definitely benefitting from this way of eating but I'm not sure carbs are the culprit although in a diet containing animal products they seem to be.

about 3 years ago I did a detox diet in which for 28 days I had to ban meat, fish, eggs, dairy, sugar and eat instead all grains, nuts pulses, veg, rice milk, oil, herbs and spices. After the initial five days during which I wanted to die I felt so awful, I started to feel really well. No HB, reflux, I didn't feel bloated--I really felt quite euphoric. If I felt so well why didn't I continue?I feared nutritional deficiencies and I missed too many foods. Perhaps it is the combination of certain foods that caused HB.The detox allowed no animal products and the low carb substantially restricts grains any thoughts on this?
My solution was pretty much this:

Lots of spring water
Low acidic diet

ENZYMNES (supplements) coated of course
pineapple
apples
papaya
no heavy meal 2 hours before bedtime
all minerals and
magnesium, B12, Vitamin c
with ALL the flavnoids
CoQ10

good balance of Raw foods -
vegetables because enzymes
are destroyed when cooked

I eat carbohydrates in good balance
and keep them complex. Too much sugar
can cause reflux (did for me)
Hi Merc29 and JoCaste,
Can't really comment without all the details. All I can say is I have never found any other solution (besides getting the excess carbs under control) that worked. Grains, apples, other fruits (besides berries) only make symptoms worse in my experience.

I truly believe that reducing excess carb intake will rule the heartburn treatment world in the not too distant future. This view is shared by other experts in the field that I have been in touch with.

Best of luck.

Yes I've always found that raw salads --the enzymes-- help to keep the food down. For me, eating some animal protein doesn't seem to get in the way of this--. I think I'm eating a low acidic diet now. I'm wondering if it's the increased proportion of raw veg (enzymes) that has actually made me feel better in that the acid/alkali ratio has been adjusted to facilitate digestion.

The common denominator here is definitely the enzymes found in raw veg and fruit--whether one is following a low carb meat-based diet diet or a diet that concentrates on veg and carbs and no animal products.
Jocaste,
I also eat a lot of salad. I believe salad is good because most vegetables in salad are high fiber, low carb. I don't believe that enzymes in the food is a huge factor because most enymes are acid sensitive protiens that are destroyed by acid in the stomach. Only enymes like pepsin produced in the stomach (that are acid tolerant - in this case activated by acid) are able to function in this harsh environment. Same goes for fruit. I would only advocate berries and tightly controlled amounts of other fruits, mostly lemons and lime wedges.

Dr Norm
Hi Dr. Norm! :)

I have a question for you again. If someone like myself is a heart pt. and diabetic, COPD, along with having GERD with Barrett's...the AHA, along with the FDA now has advanced their new food pyramid re eating 2-5 cups of fruits and vegetables per day...how can I and others manage that and the GERD as well? I'd really like to know, as there seems to be a very strong link amongst us heart pts. having GERD as well as having some form of GallBladder disease. I did a very informal poll a while back on this. I'd sincerely love to get your feedback on this.

Thank you in advance!

Hugs, Teri :)

Teri,
Thanks for your post. Since you have more than one condition you are dealing with, you need the advice of a great MD and phamacist to keep an eye on your meds and their potential interaction with one another and perhaps need to consider any special dietary contraints. As you know, I am a microbiologist, not a physician. All I can say is that I am unaware of any evidence that reducing excess carbohydrates in your diet would adversely affect any of your conditions, with the possible exception of gallbladder disease. Because the gallbladder stores and dispenses bile and bile is used to help digest fats, you may need more specific advice on the amount of fats and the type of fats in your diet. I would imagine that many of the healthy fats I recommend in my book, like olive oil and fats from avacados, are likely less offensive than other fully saturated fats and transfats. As for GERD, I don't care what the food pyramid says, low sugar / low starch vegies are OK, high sugar / high starch foods and vegetables / grains are out.

Dr Norm
Thank you very much, Dr. Norm!! I really do appreciate you taking the time to answer me. (I had my gallbladder removed about a year ago). It was a fun year. I only use olive oil for cooking. I do have to watch my starches already, things such as corn, potatoes and peas are treats. :) So when you say grains? - a fiber cereal is not good? That's what is highly pushed as well these days. I drink only water. And I use only Splenda - I happen to like that one, too. Though I do love fruits - almost any of them!

You've given me things to think about and I appreciate that.

Hugs, Teri :)
