16 year-old female with 14 year history .....

My daughter is 16 and has had headaches since she was about 2 years old. She was the only kid in grade school that had pain meds in the school office.  She is almost 17 now and has been having a terrible time.  I wish we could isolate what starts these attacks.  I work in a doctor's office and we have tried every migraine medicine available.  She has never had a demerol injection because I see too many addicts and we just don't want to go down that path.  Currently, she is taking 400 mg of ibuprofen daily when she doesn't have a headache and 800 mg, three times daily when she does have a headache.  She is also taking 160 mg of propranolol in the morning and 80 mg at night. Her grades are good overall, but now that she is a junior in highschool, it's getting harder to make up the missed work.  I think she was only able to get through 2 half days last week.  I feel so helpless!  I think we will have to go through the board office and get her classified as a handicapped child. That way, the school will have to accomodate her absences and also offer tutoring if she gets too far behind.

Right now, I am really wondering how she will get through college like this. She wants to go to a christian university to study youth ministry, but I'm sure they will have attendence requirements.

Does anyone else here have a child that has migraine headaches.  How do you handle the school situation?

Thanks,

bambi
My son started having headaches at age 6. He has mostly outgrown them but I've had them for over 40 years. I've tried everything out there, including drugs, emergency rooms, accupuncture, everything. In the last couple of months I have actually found relief through finding out what foods I my system has problems with. That doesn't mean that I'm allergic, just that my system has a problem with a particular food or chemical. What a relief!
hi bambi, this is my 1st day here....before we go any further in my intro...this is what i have to say about your girl. Have you already done a CT scan on her? if yes, what was the Dr's feedback? cheers
Hi-I'm a sixteen year old girl and have had migraines since I can remember, but my doctors and parents didn't believe me until I was 14.  When I complained to my doctor he dismissed me and told me to take Motrin whenever i got a headache.  Anyway, I did exactly what he told me (because he was the doctor) and because my problem was so bad I ended up taking 200mg of Motrin everyday for a year(that was always for a headache I got, never preventive).  Finally it got so bad that I would sit in a corner for hours and cry continuously.  When my doctors were twiddling their thumbs trying to figure out what was wrong, I had already known.  I had become physically dependent on Motrin (and Aleve and every other otc).  Of course no one listened to me because I'm only a child.  I quietly and gradually lessened the amount of meds I was taking (often leading to intensely severe HA), by politely refusing the meds when offered but without explanation.
My point is that although the process was painful I'd be in even more pain now if I hadn't stopped.  More importantly, I believe I might have done permanent damage with the drugs.  Even if my head feels perfectly fine and I take Motrin for something else I lapse right back into old patterns.  Personally, and this is by no means a professional opinion I think excessive use of otc's is dangerous and although different things work for different people, everyone should be careful in monitoring doses.  Hope things work out for her!

Hi Allison,
I'm curious and do not understand from your message. What did you feel, or do you feel is/was the danger in taking those OTC meds chronically? What was motivating you to give them up, and what do you do now, for your headaches? Thanks for clarifying this.
