I was getting ready this morning to head out for my third treatment when I got a call from the clinic. The radiation machine is broken and they don't know how long it will take to repair it! They said they would call to get me in this afternoon if possible, and if they don't call today that I should call them before heading there tomorrow!!!
Now how in the world is this going to affect my treatments? If I miss 2 this week will I have to make them up at the end or will I have to start from scratch at the beginning?
Maybe I broke it!

Yikes! That does not sound good....but I think they would tack them onto the end. Definitely won't start from scratch. I hope the doc will refer you to another center or something if they can't get it up and running soon...

Hi Mia! Hmmmm, you get 2 treatments and break the machine. You must really have some strong vibes woman! lol
The machine broke during my rad treatments also. They won't make you start over. When they get the machine fixed and you go in for the appt, that will be your 3rd. They will just add the ones that you missed onto the end. Don't worry, they won't let you miss a single treatment.
Since you have some free time today, go out and do something fun for yourself.

Mia-Hope they call you this afternoon. If you have to wait until tommorrow I think Deb has an excellent suggestion.

Hi Mia,
This was a pretty common occurrance when I was getting my rads. There were about 8 machines, and at least one of them had a problem every week. Try not to worry about it. These things happen, and the treatments are just tacked onto the end. It is an inconvenience. I'm sorry it happend your first week, tho. Big hugs are coming your way.

Well they got it up and running early this afternoon. The tech who repaired it drove 2 hours to get there. And this is the only machine at this clinic. It's a small branch of the Cleveland Clinic so they are using good equipment, they said this happens sometimes though.
You should have seen the waiting room with all of us lined up waiting to go! I thought it was a crisis to have this happen at the beginning of my treatments, I met two women who are in their last week! Can you imagine having 3 treatments to go and then this????
And I also learned a valuable lesson today. No matter how bad you think you've got it there is someone who has it worse. One of those women is being treated for rectal cancer. And she has such a great spirit. She said her teenage daughter got mad in the beginning because she couldn't lose her mom at this time in her life. So she has the fighting spirit to keep her going.
Makes you think.
Hugs and thanks for the advice,
Mia

Mia,
Amazing how the Lord opens our eyes at just the right time, isn't it?
I remember when I was taking rads, I would always come out of there counting my blessings after seeing those that were so much worse off than I was.
So glad that you were able to get it done. One more down!
Hugs,
Debbie

Yeah, the machine went down a couple of times for me. I had this wierd idea that I was on a tight schedule. I was taking the entire length of rads off, since it would have been too much driving to do both. So I was counting the days to get back to work.
They tacked it on at the end. The number of treatments had to be met. Yeah, and you get to meet people, going there daily. Ask Ardee! She used to have a shuttle gang she was quite friendly with. They were very up and cheerful. There were also times where it was scary and depressing, because of those worse off than us.
Hang in there, and this may happen again. It's not a reflection on the equipment. I also found out about those techs!!!! do they make buckage or what!!!!!!!!!

You will find that you will become friends with the group of people that are there at the same time you are. When I was going thru rads, I found that I almost looked forward to going just to be able to enjoy the people that I had met there. Our "group" started a tradition. When one of us would complete our treatments, there would be a rose given from each of us to the "graduate" as well as we would all either go out to lunch or dinner and celebrate. The staff told us that they really hated to see all of us grad as we were the most unique group they had ever had. I am still in touch with several of these peeps. So have fun and make good of a not so good situation.
