This is fully in line with the neoliberal model of business. Human and animal pain is secondary to profit. Unfortunately, we have people who view skepticism of this obvious sabotage as a matter of 'conspiracy theory'. The fact is: it's not a conspiracy to suggest that humanity could be rid of many illnesses and problems if it weren't for thugs like Goldman Sachs.

I stopped reading you right there. If you believe that the current treatment/ cure model is merely based on a lack of outcome despite the efforts of good honest folks like Goldman Sachs, good on ya. Ever heard of capitalism?

isleman: why do you say this is "neoliberal" because it seems the opposite to me. Liberals do not own Pharma companies. Liberals do not run Goldman Sachs.
I am right in the middle of the political spectrum, conservative in money and liberal with freedom of choice and believing peoples rights should be well above corporate rights. There should be limits to pharma gouging but also reward to those who discover cures.

Neo-Liberal does not mean Liberal. It is a kind of fiscal conservative free market approach. It is only liberal in the freedom of markets.
I too chafe at hearing the human afflictions talked about in such business models. I wish we had a socialized system that substantially removed profit from medicine. But we don't, and even if started today, it would take years to transition without collapsing markets and creating chaos.
As long as businesses have to choose where to develop treatments, they are going to look for the bigger markets and the markets that are not going to go away. For the rarer conditions it is up to government or non-profit to fund the basic research, and possibly also bring the treatment to market. The CCFA might play this role in future.
There may also be models where a drug/therapy developer brings something to market, and once proven, places it in a public trust. They get some shares in the trust, like shares in a mutual fund. The shares pay ongoing income based on the whole fund, and on new treatments coming into the fund - not just theirs. This is a semi-privatized form of nationalized medical research and development. IT would take societal change and working out of details.
Anyway, as annoying as it is to hear such frank discussions, if we want unrestrained capitalism, we cannot be upset when companies seek profit - or ask them to act like charities.

Ever notice how many advertisements run for IDB drugs? We are obviously a huge cash cow... expensive drugs that just treat the symptoms but never get at the cause.
It's a tough problem to solve. Without a golden payout as an incentive, who will spend the time, effort and money to find promising drugs? At the same time, who will look for simple, inexpensive cures if you can't make a buck?
Personally I would pay 10's of thousands for something that would cure me of U.C., so I'm not sure Goldman Sachs has it right.

Goldman sacks just comes across as cold and awful, especially to state it so nonchalantly. There are non-profits and hep c cure was developed. So it's not quite as dire as some state it to be. Pace is undoubtedly slower to a cure due to such statements though...

It's very disturbing that anyone would put someone's health after a business' bottom line. Seems like that's the way the world turns unfortunately. I would have definitely given just about any amount of money to know i was free of UC, now I had surgery, and I am free of it though. I also didn't have to blow my entire bank account, which is nice, and I am actually thankful I didn't have to. Those shouldn't be the options. A cure isn't even in the cards right now regardless, and who knows when or if it will be.
But no, curing isn't a good "business" decision.

I do not believe there is any conspiracy to keep cures from coming to market. I do believe, however, that incentives exist that push research toward maintenance medications and long-term treatments over "one and done" type cures.
The Goldman analyst was just doing their job. I am not offended by his or her question, but it does outline the issue with a for-profit healthcare system. What gets my blood boiling is when companies search out long standing treatments for diseases where only one drug exists. They then buy up the company that produce that drug and proceed to raise the price 100 times over. Those executives should be dragged out into the streets and stoned.
On a brighter note, Warren Buffett (Berkshire Hathaway), Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Jamie Dimon (JP Morgan) are teaming up to create a healthcare company free from profit incentives in order to bring down healthcare costs for American workers. I'd love to see other CEO's engage in this type of thing.
