Can melatonin cause a flare?

My symptoms have been well-managed via Humira and the SCD diet.

This past weekend, I tried a CBD oil that has melatonin in it. After 2 nights of the melatonin CBD product l, I developed a flare-up, with the sudden appearance of bloody stools and strong colon cramping.

I'm curious if anyone has ever had a flare triggered by melatonin? The melatonin is the only new thing going on with me.

The other possibility is that this flare was triggered by school stress, or is random.

Any thoughts?
I love melatonin and take it often with no side effects. I think I read that it helps with free radical damage and oxidative stress and is generally protective for us to use. I have had bad gastic distress from cbd oils though so I avoid those. Lots of diarrhea and nausea.

I don't know if it will bring on a flare or not. I know I cannot take melatonin. I tried it and when I wake up I felt very groggy and sluggish.

A flare isn't spontaneous...and I wouldn't think that 2 nights of using melatonin would cause your symptoms as such. If you're already flaring, it could exacerbate symptoms...but more likely a progression.
Melatonin is a hormone...for some with autoimmune issues it's contraindicated.

There is an old thread that ran in the GERD forum about melatonin causing diarrhea, once they stopped using it the diarrhea went away. That thread was about 8 pages long.

@quincy -- That's not true for me. I've had sudden short flares caused by intense emotional distress. For example, I went to visit my mother last Fall, and the distress of the visit triggered a *massive* flare-up the day after my visit with her, that appeared out of nowhere. Bloody stools and cramping for 5 days, and then once I had returned home, the flare had gone.

So I do think that since flares can be triggered by emotional distress, they can also be triggered by disagreeable physical substances.
Hi...I can see it exacerbated, but not from zero to full blown in a day. However...can you use mesalamine at all, as in the retention enemas?

I've done a little reading on melatonin, and one of the striking things to me was that most folks are dramatically overdosing it. Like we only need .1-.3mg an hour ahead of sleep, not the massive doses often on the shelves. I'm curious what dose you were taking?

Since this thread is from 2024, you’ve likely moved on, but I’ve noticed that additives or carrier oils in CBD drops often trigger flares.

Switching to edibles helped me avoid the gut irritation caused by liquid tinctures.
