Coming back to football after a reconstruction - is 40 too late to aim for it?

Reconstructed the knee last year and I am back training, though nowhere near matches. The surgeon was non-committal about returning to the same level and the physio was more encouraging, so I have set myself a target that may be unrealistic. What I would like to know is what people who came back in their late thirties and forties actually found - did the knee hold up to the twisting, and did you change how you played rather than just whether you played?
