If a diabetic, irrespective of his age, keeps his BS level always within the range of 90-140, does he really have a chance of developing complications? The specified range constitutes the general non-diabetic range. Hence, should'nt this entail that the risks that are typical to an average non-diabetic, is akin to the risks faced by a well-controlled diabetic?

Hi AM_BD,
You are forgetting one very important thing. It is usually some time before most individuals are actually diagnosed with diabetes, especially Type 2. In this intervening time when your blood sugar is out of control and you don't realize it, you are doing unseen damage to various parts of your body.
How this damage progresses or affects you in later life is the $64,000 question. So it is easy for me to tell you that with if you control your sugars, you theoretically should be relatively healthy, but who knows what damage you may have incurred before you came under control!
In any event, why buck the odds. We all know that if you let your blood sugars go out of control nasty things will eventually happen, so just don't do it!! Will this avoid any and all complications....who knows! But its better than the alternative.
One of the problems with diabetes is that we don't know all the implications of the disease yet as is shown by Warren's link to the Alzheimer's-type3 link. Perfect blood sugars may not be the only anwer. We may still be having problems that we don't recognise. If diabetes turns out to be an infamatory disease that may explain it's links to heart attack and stroke which are also being investigated for their inflamatory characteristics....
There just isn't enough information yet...

I have only raised this topic because my diabetologist explained this to me while trying to convince me of the beenfits of tight control. Hope I am not appearing as obdurate & disagreeable to you all.
