I’ve had Fibro for well over ten years (Lost count, gave up
trying to keep track) along with asthma and CFS.
The last 18 months or so I’ve been getting repeatedly
compressed nerves in my should (Ulnar and Median). It seems to me like it’s the
shoulder muscles contracting so hard that it’s them squishing the nerve.
When the nerve gets smooshed the only way to relieve it is
myotherapy on the shoulder. Once the lovely lady find the right spot to stick
her thumb, and my entire shoulder explodes in pain, the muscles relax and the
nerve seems to come free.
Then it’ll tighten up again a few days later, and the whole
process repeats.
I find that when my asthma’s been bad and the shoulder
muscles have been over worked cos I’m breathing differently the nerve
compression is a lot worse.
Is it actually possible for the muscles to be contracting to
the point that they’re smooshing the nerves?
I wish I had more information on the specifics you asked about, but I wanted to share what I knew since I have been very concerned about my ulnaar nerve as well lately.
Any repetitive movements can harm the nerves if they happen too much. Gentle streching might help, I founds some on youtube for the unlnaar nerve, but you should ask your dr about it first. There are a lot of things that can help like a special elbow brace you can wear at night. Try not to lean on your elbow at all and never sleep on it at night, try to keep it straight while u sleep. You can do this by wrapping a towel around the elbow gently. I'd reccomend talking to your dr as in some cases people need surgery to fix these kinds of problems.
I hope you can get rid of this pain soon, fibro is more than enough pain for us! Best of luck to you.
I've had my yoga teacher run me through all the shoulder stretches for it, and they've been great. I never realised how much mobility I’d lost in my shoulders until I started yoga again this year. I have noticed that the nerves aren’t compressing as regularly since I’ve been doing yoga.
The odd thing is the shoulder I sleep on is fine. I always sleep on my back or on my right side, and it’s my left shoulder that’s playing up. I always thought I slept with it pretty straight, but apparently I use that arm to latch onto the doona and pull it around me, and then refuse to let go. (I also apparently swear like a trooper in my sleep when my partner tries to get the doona back... But I figure that if he doesn't want to be sworn at he can get his own doona *Shrug.)
I’ll give the towel trick a go tonight, thanks for the tip
Sorry to hear about your issues. I have a lot of nerve damage and the more pain I'm in, the more my asthma symptoms kick in so I have a more difficult time breathing. My nerve damage is so extensive, my body slowly numbed over the years.
My knowledgeable chiropractor who understands fibro has been a great help to me when it comes to my pinched nerves.
Good luck to you.Fibromyalgia, CFS, multiple chemical sensivity, herniated disks, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, ADD, sjorgens, sleep apnea, asthma, headaches. The only medication I take is ibuprofen at night to sleep along with my supplements for sleeping. I am on a regiment of different supplements, I eat very nutritiously, and ever since my injury years ago I have been doing prescribed stretches x2 daily.
