Hello everyone. Here is my story, let me know what you think, I'll try to make it brief. I am only a mere 28 years old and I have had headaches for about 8 years. They have gone in cycles (no rhyme or reason) where I had had them EVERY DAY! I have had numerous trips to the ER and MANY other doctors. I have been on all kinds of meds and I have had nerve blocks, phsycial therapy, biofeedback, cervical spine injections, etc. They were so bad this last Dec. (2002), that I was out of work on short term disability. They have actually not been bad at all for the last few months, however.....they are starting again and I'm scared. I am not on any preventative meds and I only take Excedrin for them. However, they are getting worse. Any thoughts? Words of experience? I so do not want to be in a world of pain again! Thanks!
hey Nerak, i did my research on migraines/headaches, i had suffered from migraines for 3 years. it was tough b/c i was in the same situation...i had constant migraines. and suddenly while doing research on this i found out that almost every medication that i've tried has done nothing but put me in misery. so i did an experiment/case study on myself. i stopped eating every little possible thing that i thought was/ or would give me migraines. and 2 days later the results were there. when i couldn't stand watching tv for more than 30 mins and be able to go to sleep. i was able to do a lot of things i liked and also my migraines used to put in state of confusion. and i used to get mad at anyone for no reason. i feel like a new person and i am able to enjoy my life. if you want to try what i did then i can tell you. but let me tell you i have tried over 12 diff medications and i got fed up with taking medications that gave me no relief not even temporary relief.
Dreamangel -- I'm so happy that you found a way to manage your migraines! You should write a book!
Nerak -- if you try Dreamangel's method, I hope it works for you, too. If it doesn't, please go back and talk to your MD about different medications. There are lots of preventatives, abortives, & rescue meds out, and maybe you can find something that helps. Unfortunately, it's all trial & error. But don't give up.
I am 27 yo and I too get a ton of headaches, to the point where I was getting 1 per day and I was taking a ton of medicine (both preventative and pain killers). About 6 months ago a friend of mine advised me to see a chiropractor. At that point I felt that I had nothing to lose and I started seeing the chiropractor 2 times a week (I am now down to 1 time every 2 weeks). I cannot believe how much better my headaches are! They are not completely gone, but they have improved a lot. I would reccommend that to anyone with headaches. Also, I have found that Maxalt or Butalbital helps my headaches.
I am now taking Fioricet (Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine) and I find it helping somehwat. However, I hear that it is very habit forming and this makes me nervous. My headaches are getting worse- especially in the late afternoon and evenings and I am taking more medicine. However, in the mornings they aren't so bad. I guess as the day goes on my muscles tighten, etc. and that causes the headaches to get worse? In the am hours I usually only take one excedrin and then maybe another at lunch. But then in the afternoon they get so bad and I'm reaching for the Fioricet. I think I'm just destined to suffer from headaches- it seems to run in my family. I've actually tried a chiropractor before and he said he was only treating the "symptoms" and not the cause- he referred me to a TMJ specialist- LONG STORY! Anyway, thanks for your input!
Has anyone tried an accupuncturist? I have a friend who sees one for other reasons (she has Fibromyalga) and she says he works wonders for her. I have heard that they can help with migraines too!
I have had migraines since I was 28,I am now 44.I also am disabled(migraines are a big factor)after a 6 yr. battle with Soc. Sec.First of all,you could be getting rebound headaches,food contributes to migraines and so does other physical factors.I do get the monthly/hormonal migraines,but I also have daily headaches.They are cause by multiple things.I have fibromyalgia(bad in my neck),myfoscial pain syndrome and TMJ.All contribute to neck headaches.It took YEARS to pound it into the head of my Dr. that they were not just little ole tension headaches.
Well most recently I have seen a Physical Therapist. He believes that I have headaches for a number of reasons. Genetic predisposition, posture (sitting at computer all day), stress, etc. He has taught me some exercises to pull my shoulders back, stretch my neck, etc. Its helping a little. Every day is different though. Right now I am taking my excedrin and Ultram. Has anyone here ever been pregnant? My husband and I are talking about trying to conceive early next year. However, I am afraid that my headaches might get worse. I hate that I have to take medicine every day. Also, this passed weekend I spent every day in bed. I woke up Friday with an extreme form of my daily headache. It continued to get worse. By Saturday morning I felt that someone had hung me by my feet all night. Nothing I took or did (ice pack) helped. I almost went to the ER, but that in itself is miserable. Anyway, I am learning to except that I might have some form of headache for the rest of my life. I'm just concerned about what daily medicines might be doing to my body.
I accidentally got pregnant in 1994 and did not realize it.I had taken acouple Imitrex shots and I ended up miscarrying.Glaxo was in contact with me and my Dr.I let them know that even though I was tested as PG,when they did the ultrasound,there was nothing there.I definately miscarried and had a D & C.I did get pregnant in 1995(on purpose) and the 1st month,I had my wicked migraines,but once I hit the 2nd month...WhooHoo!I felt wonderful and never had a headache or migraine the rest of the pregnancy.I never felt so goo in all of my life.I never had morning sickness either.I wish I could be PG all the time and feel so good.Once my son was born,the migraines came back right on schedule.

I've tried everything out there, including drugs, emergency rooms, acupuncture, everything. In the last couple of months I have actually found relief through finding out what foods my system has problems with. That doesn't mean that I'm allergic, just that my system has a problem with a particular food or chemical. </div>

hi, everyone! i also had daily migraines for 8 years. i've finally found a way to break the cycle(thank God). I had done every thing that everyone else has tried. painkillers(fiornal, which almost killed me by the way, watch out with that drug. vicodin. advil, tylenol, exedrin,etc.) i also tried at least 11 preventitives. none of them worked until, and no one wants to hear this, i know that i didn't, until i stopped all the overuse of every pain killer. even the otc's, and even the triptans(which i forgot to mention that i also took and still take.)
let me tell you how i did it. it's no great story of how i heroically stopped everything. i had tried many times, but it was impossible. it all came to a head when my mom unexpectadly passed away. i couldn't deal. i was an emotional wreck, i couldn't sleep, i had constant migraines. i took way too much of everything including fiorinal or fioricet i don't even remember! anyhow, i abrutly stopped taking it, and a day later i had two seizures and was hospitalized. they started me on dilantin, which was eventually changed to neurontin by my neurologist.
this experience turned my life around. i thought that i was very close to death, so i stopped all of the nonsence with the fiorinal and everything else. i knew that my mom wanted me to live. i just took the neurontin and if necessary a maxalt every once in a while. within a week or two i noticed that the headaches where subsiding. i don't know if it's the neurontin, or stopping all the pain killers, maybe even a combination of the two, but i have my life back. these events happened in April of this year. Thank God, i'm still pretty much headache free except for a couple of times per month. compared to the excruciating daily migraine, this is heaven! good luck, every one out there ! dreaming out loud
I have suffered with migraines since I was 25, I am 33 now. In the past three months I have had severe migraines including nausea and vomitting. Three doctor's later and several trips to the ER, I am now on Effexor XR, a blood pressure med., and an anti-seizure med. Nothing seems to relieve my pain. The only thing that comes close to making my pain in my head tolerable are Loratab. Just today I received a nasty letter from the doctor I had (two) times previous about him no longer prescribing Loratab for me as pain treatment. Keep in mind, I switched to another doctor after I noticed he kept closing his eyes as though he could hardly hold them open through my last two appointments. Excuse me if I don't find him much of an expert. I would much rather be migraine free, and would challenge any doctor to make them stop. But, if living with pain or taking a couple of Loratab every four to six hours stops my pain, Who is he to judge? Sleeping without a solution. I Guess he was sleeping when I found another doctor.
I, too have migraines every day. I also stopped taking any drugs for a few days but for me it did not work. Maybe I should have tried to do it for more days but I got such a bad one that I could not handle it without drugs. I'm happy for you and to be honest a little jealous. Good luck - White Rabbit
I have been trying to ween myself off of my prescription medicine (Ultram) and just stick with Excedrin, but it is very hard. I have basically been on some type of prescription every since I first got these headaches 8 years ago. However, there was a brief time earlier this year when I was just on the Excedrin- don't know how I did that. I am just so uncomfortable all of the time- neck pain, back and shoulder aches. And they always tell you that when you feel a headache coming on to take your meds instead of waiting until the pain gets bad. But I feel guilty taking the meds so early. Sometimes, I even feel that the medicine makes my headache worse. Has this happened to anyone?
Yes that happens to me as well. They say take your meds early in case it may stop it. Then they say your taking too many meds. It gets confusing - White Rabbit
My headaches have gotten very bad over the last two weeks. There is so much pain that it makes me feel sick. I feel like someone has my head in a vice and someone is standing on top of my head and there is so much pressure in the forehead and temple area. I can't concentrate. I have an appointment with Pain Management on the 14th. That seems so far away. In the meantime I am still taking my Ultram and my primary care just gave me some Vicoprofen. I am so miserable right now. They get so bad the later the day goes on. They are every day. They are very, very intense tension-type or muscle contraction headaches. However, noise and light bother me. I am at work right now counting down the time until I can get home to my couch and just try and relax. I am almost tempted to see if an ER can break the cycle. But, hospital visits are so uncomfortable and long. How is everyone else?
