Decaf tea in IBS?

Someone posted that coffee (regular or decaf) is not good for IBS. What about decaf tea? Or herbal tea?
Robert
Hi Robert- you know, it's funny- different things bother different people.  To answer your question, decaf tea and herbal teas are supposed to be pretty to very safe for people with IBS.  Something about coffee for some reason, doesn't agree with us.  I'm a tea drinker anyway, so no bother there.  However, some people can tolerate caffeine or coffee or whatever. I think it's a very individual thing.  My mother has 'undifferentiated' (sp.?) colitis and can have massive D at tiems, but she drinks copious and I mean copious amounts of Coke or Pepsi daily ( most people with D can not do either caffeine or carbonation or both).  Sometimes it's about all she can tolerate.  Likewise, she can eat ice cream (go figure!) but NO milk- big D- and she's not lactose intolerant.  Anyway, be cautious with your trials and tribulations- good luck and hope you can tolerate some fun things.
I think the issue is that coffee, whether it be decaf or reg, is acidic. Lots of us can't do the heartburn foods and drinks. BUT I can have decaf anything, soda even, but nothing with large amounts of caffiene. I think tea is pretty safe. Again, as long as it's decaf.

I was told tea had more acid in it than coffee. Is that true? Was told that years ago so it might be wrong.
caffiene is usually problem because it's a natural bowel stimulant. Decaf is better I think and herbal tea is even better...try chammomile.

:)
I drink decaf tea, coffee and decaf coke and am ok with that. I dont drink herbal teas but should maybe give it a try

What about gingerale? Is that good or bad?
ginger ale is suppose to be good for your stomach. Ginger is known to settle your stomach. I take ginger tablets when I feel sick.

Gingerale is still full of sugar and likely has caffeine in it so I myself would avoid it...eating ginger is another thing though.

:)
Like Victoria said, it should be good... Unless you have problems with carbonation.

Hi,

My GI told me to stay away from the caffiene as well.  I drink the decaf tea and decaf herbal teas.  Do good.  Let me drink a coke and it triggers me big time.

Take care of you,

Tee

There are plenty of decaf Ginger Ale's out there.  I'm also stocked up on Sierra Mist which is decaf as well.  Sometimes that carbonation helps settle the gut (along with give you the burps).  tongue

What about diet coke that is decaf and sugar free?
Diet Coke has the fake sugar Aspartame in it, which has been known to trigger IBS symptoms.
All sugar substitues and sugar alcohols have been know to wreak havoc on IBSers.

I like Stewart's colas--particularly the cherry ones. They taste WAY better than Coke's cherry version and they have no caffeine and they are fairly low in carbonation. I have drank both the diet and the regular kind without any problems, although I tend to only drink the regular kind now because I want to 1) stay away from fake sugars and 2) the diet kind is very hard to find. They have never bothered me a bit, although they are so expensive I only get a 4-pack a week, at most, so I don't drink more than two a day, at the most.

I seem to be able to tolerate decaf black tea, but definitely not the caffeineted kind, nor caffeinated cokes. I can drink green tea and other herbal teas, though, with caffeine; I never drink enough of them at one time to bother me. I don't have a problem with the caffeine in chocolate either.
