Deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA)

Last month I did another round of sodium valproate. This is generally effective at reversing insulin resistance and stimulating regeneration of beta cells, as I've described before

My blood sugar has been okay, but the latest round of treatment for Lyme disease was causing me a lot of HPA axis stress. I knew that the stress hormones would eventually lead to insulin resistance if I didn't do something about it.

So I did three weeks of sodium valproate. This caused some pretty significant symptoms of opioid withdrawal, as my beta-endophin levels had clearly been too high. (I don't use opiates.)

I finished the valproate about 2 weeks ago and I'm feeling better, but now I have a new problem, where I am severely deficient in omega-3 fatty acids.

The lack of EPA/DHA was causing insomnia and I've been eating a lot of fish. I went to the sushi place several times and after eating fish I would fall asleep within a few hours, regardless of what time it was.

I've described this before, but at the time I didn't fully understand why it was happening

So why does this happen?

One of the major goals of type 2 diabetes treatment is to downregulate SREBP-1, as this chemical signal leads to weight gain and insulin resistance. The problem is that this signal is also necessary for the production of enzymes that convert ALA to EPA and DHA. If you just suppress this without adequate amounts of EPA and DHA then you have a problem.

So if your diabetes treatment is suddenly causing insomnia, maybe you need to supplement EPA and DHA.
