diarrhea type IBS

I have a question that no one seems able to answer, not even my doc.  My IBS is extremely sensitive to foods.  Most of the things that are recommended for this type IBS I am unable to eat.  Even foods that have different forms are a problem i.e. tater tots vs french fries.  The first I can't eat because it dissolves into tiny little pieces which act like race cars in my colon.  Does anyone out there have this problem?  I take 2 capsules of Asacol twice a day but even this only slows the process a little. Any helpful hints?  chesswoman
Hi chesswoman,
Welcome to Healing Well and the IBS forum :)

I'm a little confused because asacol is a medication used to treat IBD, not IBS. There are a few medications that doctors use to treat IBS-D. Lotronex is the medication that is used for extreme diarrhea however there are some risks and I believe that doctors are required to have you sign a release form prior to prescribing. OTC Calcium and probiotics have worked for many on the forum. I'm sure you will get more responses to this.

Take care

dbab,
I have had IBS diarrhea type for many years. While I have lived with this disease, I have never been able to have much success. I was on Lotronex for a year or two, and then the powers that be removed it from the shelves. It was when I had a hemorrhoidectomy done that the surgeon gave me Asacol. I can't afford to go to see my GI doc and try the Lotronex again. And that is if I had insurance, which I don't, and I probably couldn't afford it even if I could get it. How does OTC Calaium have any bearing? What is probiotics? Thanks, chesswoman

if you think back to like 10-45 mins before u have diarrhea and if you can identify the foods that you ate that is what helped me, I hope very much that this works for you.

Please post here if you try it or do it and it works, thanks
Try to keep a food diary and write down everything and see if you see patterns.

I myself over the years, have had to completely stop eating many foods. I think the first thing was eggs, then onions, peanut, and milk. I also have had to stop red meat and basically anything you fry because of the grease and fat.
I also cannot have butter and tomato base things.

I pretty much eat a very regimented, same diet of fresh sandwhiches and Tyson nuggets. Yes it is boring, but I know what my consequences are.

I hope that you can maintain a variety and hopefully not have to eliminate a lot. Sometimes you can have things in moderation. I also try to avoid "small" pieces like corn and tater tots, the same thing happens to me!

Also, be aware of hidden foods. Like for instance, peanuts really bother me and you can find peanut residue in chocolate candy and then some people cook with peanut oil.

I read a lot of food labels and thank goodness, there is a new FDA law that labels have to be more simple and straightforward, like instead of casein, it will say MILK. And then I say RUN

Good luck and God Bless.

That's some great info katydid & dodge.  :-)

Dr. dodge, welcome to HealingWell!  I hope you get some great information here and continue to post.

Chesswoman, probiotics are "good bacteria" that our intestines need to function properly.  You find them in yogurt products and/or by taking a supplement.  I believe the most common probiotic is Acidophilus.  Many of us here take probiotics daily.  In addition, many of us are on a combination of probiotics.  I take Kyo-Dophilus, Phyto Pharmica Probiotic Pearls and Acidophilus.  Here is a great link to give you info: about probiotics

Take care.

I understand about the same food in different forms making a difference. I can eat sausage, cheese, onions, and bell peppers all mixed in with scrambled eggs and put them on a torilla with salsa and be prefectly fine. I can have all of those same ingredients in an omlette and get diarrhea. My fiance and I can't figure that one out, but somehow omlettes kill me. Don't know if it's the extra oil (not that I don't use just as much in other things I cook) or maybe more cheese (not that I can't eat a lot of it by itself); it's just a mystery.

You haven't ever had your gall bladder out, have you? A lot of people don't know but there's medicine out there for people who don't have one and have diarrhea because of it.

I have taken the calcium when my diarrhea got real bad and it worked wonders. I have read that calcium soothes inflammation/irritation in the gastrointestinal tract, in addition to absorbing excess water and having a constipating effect.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. I, too, have a list of foods I can't eat. Some that you listed I hadn't considered. Form still seems to be my biggest enemy, as I see it is for some of you. The calcium link was very helpful, moderator, as I used to take calcium but quit. I am going to give serious consideration to resuming this as I was not aware of the relationship between diarrhea and calcium. Thanks, chesswoman
Chesswoman, the calcium will be good for soothing inflamation as well.
Good luck! :-)
Please keep us posted.

Hmmm.... That is a good question. I would venture to say no, but I really don't know.
Can anyone answer this?
