What are everyone's opinions about driving when you have Parkinson's Disease?

Driving in many cases is not impaired by PD.I still drive and feel perfectly safe behind the wheel.I was DX in 98 and i'm on mirapex and stalevo.I will not drive for about an hr.after taking mirapex cause it does make me drowsy.If I can't avoid driving I will wait till I get to my destination before taking this med.Everyone however is different with PD ,and meds ,and I do know many that have stopped driving.Guess it is up to the individual,and if they have PD related driving problems they should not be driving.Obviously that applies to any situation which impairs driving ability.Any one else out there have any thoughts.Ed

Parkinson's symptoms vary greatly from person to person and depend on what stage of the disease process you are in. I do not think there is any one blanket answer for driving with Parkinson's. I have had PD for several years and am still capable of driving. I am well aware of my personal limitations. I not longer drive long distances alone - as I do not want fatigue to be an issue. Certainly, anyone having cognative issues and impaired reflexes needs to think long and hard. For some, medications like dopamine agonists can cause sudden tiredness and sleep attacks - while for others it is not an issue. I have a friend with PD, on mirapex, that suddenly fell asleep at the wheel. If you are concerned with your skills, ask you physician for an assessment.
My dad used to drive in the first five or six years. He was okay in those early stages. Now, he is hallucinating and, obviously, can not or should not drive.
