enema trick

Having trouble getting all the fluid out of the Rowasa enema. What am I doing wrong?

On Pred since March 20, 2009 -- now 30 mg.
12 400 mg. Asacol daily, 1000 mg. Canasa - daily, Mesaline enemas nightly; 1 tbs psyllium husk powder VSL-#3 -- one packet daily, multi-vitamin; 1200 mg calcium plus D, 1000 mg fish oil.Biotin 5,000 (hair loss)
Eliminated dairy, red meat, alcohol caffeine, spicy, fried, greasy, vinegar and citrus.
Bipolar - Lamictal 200 mg, trileptal (900 mg) trazadone 25 mg. and Klonipin (whatever it takes)

I don't get "all" the fluid out, either, but most of it.
First I squeeze the middle of the bottle until the sides collapse in so as to touch each other, then I move my hand and fold the flat bottom of the bottle down onto the bottle, then I kind of roll the bottle up, from the bottom.
I assume it's made with plenty in it, figuring most of us won't completely empty it.

Diagnosed UC 1986 Prednisone almost 2 years
Asacol - 16 pills/day, cortenemas, Rowasa
Metamucil - 2 doses/day since '86, and psyllium seed powder
VSL#3DS, Multivitamin, Calcium and D, Flax Seed Oil
homemade yogurt each day
Ryzolt for arthritis pain
Son, 16, dx pancolitis 2007

I use the roll up trick, too but still never get all of the liquid. Honestly, I never worried about it I figure they probably put a little extra in there.

I did the same as songlady and Ugh when the Salofalk bottles were the same as the Rowasa.

Krissy...yeah, technique is everything. Oh, btw, the last enema I did was very hard to squeeze. Strangely, I thought of you while doing it. lol! Interesting what reminds us of whom...but in a nice way!

Once in a while, what with various generics and suppliers over the years, I'll get a box of bottles that are a stiffer plastic, and those are real buggers to squeeze. Ho well....

It didn't reverse anything once I went into a flare. I started it a week before everything got really bad.

My colon up top was on fire painwise, so I don't know what an enema would do at that point.

I'm doing it now religiously but I'm on steroids so I don't know what good it is doing. I don't mind doing them at all.

I'm having 4-5 BMs, some diarrhea, no blood right now. But again I'm on 40 mg pred. In a little over a week I start to taper. Trying very hard to heal and maintain on Asacol, supp and enemas

What I do is before I actually put it in I squeeze out all the air (it makes it more comfortable), then i put it up (which I hate haha), then i squeeze it from the bottom. It works quite well for me

I do the same thing as it keep that air out of my colon which helps keep the liquid up there/reducing the urge

Dx'd with moderate Pancolits 05/07 better with Pentasa and Cortifoam.
I also take Probiotics, Fish Oil, Curcumin, Benefiber and cannot tolerate
artificial sweetners (never could even before UC) I also stay away from products with high fructose corn syrup.

I never did have any luck doing this..how exactly do you squeeze the air out..I guess a little air goes inside of me..

That is my goal too..just the 5asa, I had my bouts of steroids and humira and I dont care for them anymore..hopefully my body agrees too..

I would keep going with them..how many asacol are you taking? maybe up that and it will take over once you stop the roids..

UCKrissy, I can't up the Asacol past 12 that I'm already on, which concerns me. If I start to flare and I'm maxed out on supps, enemas and asacol, where can I go from there?

I also had another question. I guess I haven't been shaking the enema bottle. Need to do that. Hope I haven't messed things up because I haven't.

Which method is preferrable in terms of getting the most medicine in the right place. Butt on side or butt in air. Also, what is this about, bending the bottle back? I don't understand that.

LOL Ellen you sound like me now..
nevermind bending the bottle back just put it up there and squeeze gently but firm and continuously..thats what i have learned. i do butt on side cause i want to make sure some stays in the rectum.
Just shake it a few times as you would with other things thay indicate shaking is required..dont overshake though.

So you are saying the preferrable method is on the side, eh?
