feeling of lump in throat

hi...im looking for some help regarding feeling like i have a lump in my throat. Im pretty sure i have acid reflux, but im wondering if anyone has some suggestions to get rid of this feeling. Its causing me to lose sleep and get stressed.   Ive seen some ppl suggest taking aloe vera juice and a calcium magnesium supplement along with prilosec OTC...has anyone experienced what i have ..and what helped you?  I really would appreciate ANY help ...thanks
I experienced the same thing as you, I had acid indegestion and would get a lump type feeling in my throat. It got so bad I had difficulty swallowing, and nearly everytime I ate, food would get stuck in my throat, it would take ages to go down, even while drinking water. I finally went to a specialist, and they put me to sleep, and put one of those tiny cameras down my throat and into my stomach! I had ulcers in my esophogus, from the chronic acid reflux, and they put me on medication to control it, after a few months I was fine. After a year I went off the medication, lost weight and changed my diet and that seemed to help even more.
Debsw,

I happened to read your message and found that I have the same problem as you - feeling of lump in throat, difficulty swallowing, food stuck after meals, etc.

What medications did you take to control it?

I am presently on Prisolec but the symptoms still remain.

Everything was normal on my esophagus when I had an EGD done last month.

Is anyone out there having the same problem?  I really look forward to hearing from you.

Also, can someone help to explain how does GERD cause food to get stuck in your throat after meals.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same symptoms and until recently was having great success with plant enzymes tablets available from health food stores.  They help to speed up the digestive process and my symptoms were non existant for about 3 months.  Unfortunately the no longer seem to be working quite as well but they might for you.

Sean,

Thanks for replying.

I was actually going to write to you after seeing your post in another topic - Diet.

Despite a cleared EGD, I am still paranoid about the lump in the throat sensation.  Just cannot understand where the sensation comes from when my throat is not inflammed.  Is it really food stucked?

Hopefully, my next appointment with a new GI doctor will help.

Hi- I've had GERD for a couple of years now and have been on Protonix to control the symptoms. I have had good luck with that and have had an endoscopy twice in the last 3 years, and everything was normal. But for about 3 weeks now I've had this almost constant feeling of something being stuck in my throat. I've been to my primary care doc and she can't see anything. I can eat and drink fine and breathing normally. But naturally this freaks me out. She's sending me to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist in a few days. But like I said, I'm just freaked. I've been reading some stuff about this mainly being stress related. Which would make sense because the last month has been pretty stressful. Anyone have any input?
Hi guys im new to this forum..after 5 years of constant reflux a doctor finally got me an ultrasound found gall stones removed my gall bladder, Now 3 years later after constant chest pain ( reflux) I have now developed the tightness in throat and feeling like a ball is stuck in bottom of throat just under where a man would say his adam apple is. It makes me nervous and stressed, fighting my mind all the time reminding myself I havent choked to death before with this so just relax...I am wondering if the neck can create this? has anybody any thoughts on that?
Welcome Satina, I'm going to start you a new thread because you attached to a very old thread.

Hello,

I had the same feeling last year for almost 6 months. I went to ENT in my area and he scared me a lot. After some days I went to another doctor and he said it is probably bcause of the stress. and he priscribed me CT scan of my throat. In which he saw some more tissue at the base of my tounge. But he says if I dont have any other problem it is normal. Probably it is there since I born. Then he send me for Barium test which came normal too.

After that I did not got doctor any more and dont even feel anything in my throat so I guess it was all stress which cuase that symptom.

So dont worry and do not think too much about it.

I had no other symptoms besides the feeling of having a lump in my throat. The same feeling you get when you swallow a pill and it doesnt go all the way down. I went to the doctor today and he thinks it is thyroid related. Ordered me to get bloodwork and an ultrasound. Hope this may help someone with similar issues.
Lump-
Welcome to Healing well.
This is a very common symptom of GERD, but usually is accompanied with some type of other GERD issues. They may not be a constant heartburn, but can be off and on or "silent" heartburn. Some people don't feel the reflux as heartburn as most people do.

Hope the tests give your doctor answers for you.

take care,
Bill

Hi - the lump in the throat or tight feeling could be caused by low serotonin resulting from all the stress you've been under as a result of your suffering. I've recovered from a long painful ordeal where I burned the lining of my esophagus with lemon juice. I had the lump in the throat, difficulty swallowing, tight feeling, food stuck, you name it! I recovered through diet, supplements, meditation and finally the drug called Lexapro and some Xanax which made my recovery solid and complete. All the suffering you are going through could cause your chemicals to become unbalanced. Believe me, it happened to me which means it can happen to you as well. If all your exams are fine, then try some Xanax and see if that helps you. If it does, then your chemicals need an adjustment and Lexapro could only help. My story is on this board as well - Injury to lining of Esophagus. I wish you fast healing.

Debra (just trying to help since so many helped me)
I have that lump on my throat sensation for 7 months now and nothing has seemed to help...
I do have acid reflux and am taking 40 mg a day of omeprazole..no help!
My diet is a lot better than before but just so frustrated to feel this never-ending lump on my throat! Feel helpless, doc says take omeprazole for 6 more months!
What has helped any of you?
@lovelycc:

mine just like yours. 7 month stragith 24/7 with some chest pain.. been taking many ppi without no effect. have you tried other ppi beside omeprazole?
does anyone have allergies and wonder if that feeling is sinus drainage? that's what i've been wondering. i've been trying to figure out lately if i have costochondritis again or gerd acting up again. but i also have allergies. ugh

i get this when iwake up in the morning and also feel like i could throw up. ugh a girl at work thinks its from her allergies. i almost want to make myself throw up to feel better. i have soreness in my chest. could this be gerd? it also hurts to touch so that's why thinking it's the costo (inflammation in the cartilege of your ribs and sternum) acting up. maybe i have both. who knows? doctors sure don't.
my doc said take otc meds twice a day - i have prescription samples but they expired 2 years ago. wonder if they would still work? TAKING ibuprofen for the sore chest makes gerd worse but last night i took some aleve and i didn't have the feeling in my throat all night.
anyone get this throat feeling when they wake up?
Hi, I have had a lump feeling in my throat for about a year. It is only fine in the morning, around 11am it progressively gets worse throughout day. It hurts to talk. I've been to two specialist (ENT) and about 6 family practitioners. When I use cough drops or lidocaine (prescribed) it feels better. The lidocaine completely numbs my throat and is the most effective, but a person can only use it so often and use so much. I've had CT scan, tried acid reflux meds, tried gargling everything under the sun, tried anti bio tics, was told its not strep or tonsillitis, had a massage to relax muscles in neck, muscle relaxers and really am out of options. Anyone have any suggestions? It's pretty depressing and takes a toll on my relationship because I can never talk. It hurts too bad. Again, only relief is right after I eat, lidocaine (which completely numbs) cough drops, and when I first wake from sleep. Any advice would be appreciated
@Throat issues:
I have the exact same symptoms as you, except for the pain when talking. At the end of the day i can get a little hoarse, but no real pain...yet. Its been going on for about a year now. I have seen a few doctors with no result so far. The lump sometimes get more like a choking feeling, like a pressure over the lower part of my throat. My next step is to see a physiotherapist, if the pain has something to do with the muscles in the neck (I sit still all day in front of a computer). I'll let you now how it goes. If you have any progress, please let me now...

Good morning. I had very similar swallowing issues which caused me considerable stress. What worked for me was finding Dr. Jamie Koufman's book, "Dropping Acid". Fortunately, I live close to NYC and eventually became one of her patients.

After reviewing my original doctor's lab report which indicated I had Barrett's Esophagus, she retested me. Unlike my original procedure which took place under sedation and in a hospital, Dr K. performed a Transnasal Esophagoscopy/biopsy in her office while I was awake and sitting in a comfortable chair. Guess what? I never had Barrett's. Under Dr. K's care, I no longer take PPIs and don't have those "food sticking" moments any longer.

It would be worth you reading some of Dr. K's pioneering work (she actually coined the term "silent reflux" as an example), some of which you can see for free on her blog at The Voice Institute of NY site. She also has some informative YouTube videos.

Hope this helps. Best of luck in your search for answers.

Hi throat issues, there is a chinese medicine called Ban xia houpo tang (also in form of "ban xia houpo pian). this medicine is a herbal combination for globus pharyngeus, which you have. There are basicly two types of patients with globus: first (spasmodic) who has a sensation of something large stuck in throat, that is determined by anxiety or emotions that bring abnormal neuromuscular tension in larynx, or those without determining psychological state. I guess those present with persistent phleghm (nonspasmodic) that is hard to swallow and comes back within couple of seconds after swallowing saliva while not eating. In this case dryness of larynx is the cause which is wriiten in one thread called" One way of explaining globus phenomenon" which wrote a very experienced ENT. This as a true globus happens without pathology of other respiratory diseases that cause mucus accumulation or post nasal drip. Some patients may present with post nasal drip or bronchial asthma and among those globus is harder to be diagnosed because it may be very well hidden. Globus in my view is just another type of sensory neuropathy, and you may search the term cricopharyngeal spasm. I would be very careful saying that many patients who have globus have GERD or LPR, because once you dont feel acid or gagging throughout the day, it is not probably to go silent at night. There are insufficient methods in my country for diagnosis LPR, so if you don´t feel you have it, you don´t have it most probably. There are many reasons for globus pharyngeus to occur and you should look into the studies. Other studies show efficiency of low dose amytriptiline 25 mg a day, gabapentine. I also read at one forum about low dose baclofene 2 times a day being effective in a patient. There is article - Throat- feeling lump inside by richard wheelan, which mention some herbs. Last thing is guaifenesin that may bring some effect. there are many things to try. Find a video by doctor robert bastian- cricopharyngeal spasm. I have a phleghmy globus so I ordered ban xia houpo pian as it has clinical studies and am waiting for my order. I haven´t tried medicine I wrote above because I found about the fact I have globus sensation only a week ago, so I am wainting for my order now to arrive.
