Ok, today I am hungry and ever since lunch, I have had horrible smelling gas. Why do mine smell so rotten at times? Not to be gross, but it is like rotten eggs.
I ate oatmeal this morning, with 1/4 c l/f vanilla yogurt, sweet & salty nut nature valley bar, cooked veggies (I bought here at work), not sure what was on them, but I ate them yesterday too and was fine....go figure. I just ate a fruit cup.
I drink Propel and water!

I don't understand it either. It happens to me every now and then for no rhyme or reason (that I can see). I have given up on trying to figure it out... So I just take Gas-X when that happens.
I hope someone will come along with a theory.
BTW - I've been tested for parasites so it can't be that.

I just took another gas-x, the first one I took a few hours ago, but only took one. I think mine is more often, but I can go a week without, then bam.
I had a c-diff done and stool cultures......negative. I am not sure if this is what testing for parasites is?

the smell is often food not being properly digested. certain foods cause problems for me. apples and citrus fruits. brocolli, cauliflower, tomatos, peppers, and dairy.
charcoal, and chlorophyll pills can help get rid of the smell. gas-x helps by making big gas bubbles into little gas bubbles so they pass more easily and perhaps less offensively.
jhp are you sure you are not lactose intollerent?
does propel have sugars in it? fructose, sucrose, sorbitol, etc..... these may cause problems
have you tried probiotics yet?

When my guts are upset, things make my poo smell. I can eat garlic regularly without a problem, but if I mess my guts up for some reason, any garlic I eat will smell strong. Salsa too. So it may be a matter of something messing up your guts to the point where something that you eat that gives off an odor gives off a lot more odor than it would otherwise, if that makes any sense. I mean odor can be a sign of a problem or just a by-product of a problem (as mine is).
ocrap, yes....propel has sucrose syrup and sucralose. I thought I was lactose intolerant when I was in my twenty's, but isn't that with dairy only? Yogurt shouldn't bother me.

yogurt can bother lactose intollerant people. the thought behind it not bothering some is the bacteria in it. i cannot eat yogurt, but you may be fine. see if the next time you eat it you have the same problems.
i used to drink arizona green tea daily and thought about the sugar in it..... stopped drinking it and felt a lot better. i think it correlates.

There is only 4gm per 16.9 fl oz bottle, that is very little. What else is there to drink without sugar that has flavor?

if you don;t think that that is the problem, by all means keep drinking it. good chance it is not. seems foods that bother us one day dont the next,,,, ibsers seem to fluctuate a lot.
i do think elimination diets would be very good for you though. it can't hurt. try no dairy, and low sugar for a week and see how you feel. then bring them back in (seperately) and see how you feel.
what steps are you taking other than elimination to help your ibs???
are you currently taking meds, probiotics, calcium, aloe, teas, ???

I am experiencing with foods right now. I just bought green tea, peppermint and chamomile tea and I am going to have some peppermint tea after dinner. I am eating marinated honey barbecue chicken...love it, but I have never noticed this to bother me, mixed frozen veggies...green beans, peas, corn and carrots....oh and lima beans. I ate this last week and was fine all week! Oh, and white rice on a lavash loave. My b/f just told me he bought dannon activia yogurt and it has probiotics in it, so I will try this tomorrow.
I was taking zelnorm and glycolax, but stopped three weeks ago per my gastro's request since I had the D. I need something for this GAS....yuck

JHP, I question you eating the Nature Valley Bar and the honey barbecue chicken. Those things would absolutely rip me up. Especially if I was feeling bad already. I just went through a 4 day limited diet. I only ate soluable things like oatmeal/rice/potato without skins. Boring, but I feel better than I've felt in a long time. From you posts I gather you are really suffering. You might think about giving your guts a break right now from anything remotely questionable. Also, you mentioned the Activia Yogurt. I haven't tried it. Yogurt is a dairy product so I don't go there.* I bought some soy yogurt by White Wave from Whole Foods last night and it is really really good. In fact, if I had known I would have gotten into it a long time ago. Only $.99.
Good luck. I feel you.
* If I'm going to torture myself with dairy it's gotta be Haagen Daaz Swiss Vanilla Almond!
Yogurt with live bacterial cultures can usually be taken by people who are lactose intolerant, because it contains lactase which helps to digest the lactose in a person who is lactose intolerant. At first, one may experience more gas symptoms but that quickly resolves after a few days or so, when the good bacteria starts to overtake the bad bacteria.
It's all up to the individual, of course if someone experiences great difficulty with yogurt, then maybe it's better not to eat it. Good luck...

JHP,better be D than C trapped gas.So keep Zelnorm.
Cashberry, the meat and patato diet sound cool but how boring.

JHP,have you tried suppositories they really help for releasing pelvic pressure.
Oh and watch out sugar in yugurts.
Zelnorm was given to me for Constipation and the bloating/gas. The only thing it helped relieve some was the bloating/gas, but not the constipation. I am having regular bowel movements now, so when I go to my Internist today, I am going to see if I can start Zelnorm back up. My gastro.......sucks.
What kind of yogurt are you all talking about?

Most of them are full of sugar.
Check the label.Use the plain one and add peach to them.
However i suspect calcium to be constipating.
