My wife was diagnosed with bi-polar about a year ago. But, she has exhibited the behavior for years. She has been going to counseling and on meds for that time. We have problems with her family so this is a hard time of year anyway. She won,t make an effort to help herself by being proactive about her care. She thinks that if the meds do not work that there is no hope. Lately she has been sleeping and dreaming alot. In conversations it sounds like she is having trouble seperating the dreams from reality. This has been a very hard go. We have 2 teenage sons and I have my own business. Currently she does absolutely nothing to help out. How do you all get through this? How do you make someone want to help themselves?
Hi Kudulove,
Make sure she knows how you feel. And that she knows she is important to you and your sons. It sounds as though she is in the depressed end of the spectrum and may need a med adjustment. Be sure to contact her pdoc about ANY changes in her behavior. It is often easier to manage a depression before it is full blown and she can't even move off the bed. Often in the pit of depression we don't realize how ill we are, and need someone to tell us.
It's wonderful that you are standing by her through all this. I know how badly this can affect a family. The person suffering with the disorder certainly isn't the only one suffering. This illness takes entire familys down with the afflicted. Hang in there. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
