How long can the base part be kept on?

I am a Home Health nurse with previous background in L&D and Newborn / Preemie care. I have a patient with a new ostomy and we are curious how long the "base" part of the two part colostomy bag can remain on.  So far we've made it for 10 days, but is this a good or bad thing?  Thank you for any information you can contribute.
10 days is a bit long.  think of how your body sweats each day.  The most a base should be kept on is 7 days.  I'm surprised you made it to 10 without having the seal start to come off or without a leak occurring.  If the 2 piece is fitting fine and there are no leaks or skin irritation, I still would go no longer than 7 days...the same with the bag.  Change them both at the same time so it's easier to keep track.

I can usually manage to get 7 days - have gotten 8 days once or twice. I know of people who regularly get 10 days or more without a problem. As long as there is no sign of leakage or skin irritation, go for as long as you can I say. Sounds like your patient is one of the luckier ones to get such a long weartime.

I have had an ileostomy for 30 years now due to UC.

I'm not a complete idiot - some parts of me are missing!

I find that I am risking leakage if I go more then 4 days. Unless there is no ins. coverage I suggest not going more then 3 to 4 days, with that you get a month on a box of 10.
