I have been so depressed lately

Hi there. I am new to this forum . Just joined yesterday.  I have been really depressed lately.  I was just diagnosed with epilepsy sept 7.  IT really turned my life upside down.  I was scheduled to start school for nursing this year.  The AED's they have me on got me so tired and zombie like.  I am getting better now, but I am just still so sad about the diagnosis and postponing school, I have alot of panic attacks too.  Lots of anxiety of seizures..  I am 24 years old.  I am from NY.  Just wanted to say Hello I guess and just give you some backround info.

Hi puppylove5,

Sorry that you have been diagnosed with epilepsy.

I can understand that it must be quite hard for you right now.

I am a nurse (qualified just a year now). Don't you give up on the nursing, like you said you are just postponing it for a while.

Hopefully soon you will be sorted out with your medication and once the epilepsy is under control you can get back to your plans again.

So glad you found this site, there will be plenty of support here When you need it.

Once again welcome to HW.

Take care for now

Debbie

Hi Puppylove, *hugs* Lady I can relate.. infact you'll find out alot of people here can. Being diagnosed with any disease can be extremely uhm frightful to say the least!
I thought my life was hectic raising 3 kids with a husband who was in the military and gone most of our marriage because of TDY. So I thought I would make myself happy and start doing what it took to get me there, and then in February last year I was devastated to find out I had crohn's disease and needed surgery to remove some of my intestines. I freaked! And also slipped into denial.. Depression didn't hit me, till one day I looked in the mirror and saw a different person standing there.. I seen a 97lb woman with scars all over not the same person I thought I was.. Was up to 19 pills a day not including pain medicine and I lost all hope.

I am soooooo sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it's definitely not fair! My mom went to school to become a nurse much later in life (49) And she is now 62 and taking care of people in their homes who are sick and bedridden..

I do hope this doesn't slow you down, and maybe you can even use it to your benefit.. Once you do get your license and epilepsy under control, you'll bring more hope to those in your care.. because you'll succeed and beat this and help others with your compassion and knowledge of "being there"

Your in my thoughts and prayers, stay strong!

IM sorry about your diagnosis, but I must tell you I had two friends in high school with epilepsy, they had seizures from time to time and at first we were all very afraid for them, but in time you learn to handle the situation and quickly move on, life goes on after a seizure and the friends I had bounced back immediately after their seizure was over. Its still very scary I know, but the advances in epilepsy have been huge and you should possibly consider a very light dose of an anti anxiety medication while initially dealing with this frustrating and intimidating discovery. I myself have been sick for the last three years, turned out after many doctors and specialists that a holistic chiropracter found the cause of my illness, I had an allergy to wheat, eggs, and some dairy products. I had lost 45 pounds in that three years, but now in the past eight months since I have changed my diet my weight is back and my life has gotten so much better. My point is always be a fighter and always look for all of the answers, holistic, medical, research things for yourself so you can make informed decisions, doctors do not have all of the answers. Best of luck to you and if you ever need to talk this is the place to come. Fear is a powerful thing and should be replaced with a vigor for life filled with family and friends, let the people close to you know how you are feeling and set up a group of people you can contact when you are feeling down.

Hi there,

I understand how it feels to be diagnosed with epilepsy as I have it myself (Hence why I moderate Epilepsy as well!) and I know a fair bit about the AED's out there too. Tiredness & Memory loss are probably 2 of the most common side effects to nearly all AED's. I get them with Carbamazepine / Tegretol. Zombie like states are pretty uncommon... is your AED topamax by any chance? Feel free to drop by Epilepsy as well... its a much quieter forum but just as nice I think (But then... Im baised!)
