Hi, is it possible to get low grade fevers (99.5) with allergies and/or sinusitis? I usually get this way about Sept. every year (it comes and goes but sometimes lasts for weeks) where I get the runny nose/stuffy nose, post nasal drip, pressure behind nose, eyes. I feel as if I stuck my head in an oven; (and no, I don't think it's menopause or peri); I haven't been to a doctor and wonder if there is anything she can give me or anything over the counter to clear this up? Any suggestions?
Generally, anytime you have an infection of any kind you can run a fever. If it is sinusitis you should really call your Dr. so they can get you on some antibiotics.
Let me know what your Dr. says!

I have year round allergies to food, mold, you name it and yes, I run a low grade fever at all times...but, no doctor has ever told me if it was ok or not. I'm guessing it's because my body if continuously attacking itself.
Hi Shelley, thanks for your reply; I have never really had my allergies confirmed by an allergist; one year I was having a constant recurrance of symptoms: runny nose, throat pain, post nasal drip and I would run a low grade fever off and on; had tests run and I think my doctor at the time thought it was all in my head! I changed dr.'s and he said "you have allergies"; didn't really take any medication because it was mild, just annoying; that was 6 years ago; I get the symptoms throughout the year, but find that around Sept. they get worse and I feel like I have this low grade fever (and it comes and goes which makes me nuts!). I have never found anything like this on the internet so I was beginning to think I was crazy. So you say your doctors don't say anything about it? What meds do you use to help your symptoms? Thanks.
I also seem to experience a low-grade fever when my allergies are really bad. Currently I'm taking antibiotics because my doctor figured it was best to attack the problem like a sinus infection, even though I don't have the dark, yellowish discharge or productive cough.
Part of the problem is I've never had such a persistent low-grade fever (going on its third week but better since I started on the antibiotics) with allergies. However, I recently moved to a new area, so maybe there's allergens that I'm not quite used to.
I have a couple of questions related to this I'll throw out. The first is whether or not I can do moderate exercise with a low fever. If I feel great exept for the fever, should I still avoid exerting myself? I'm talking about doing stuff like vinyasa or "power" yoga and walking... not running marathons or such. Is the fever a sign of something I should cater to and take it easy until it's completely gone?
The second is related to my normal body temperature. My standard body temperature is 96.4 degrees. So when I say a low-grade fever, I'm talking around 97.1-97.5 degrees. Since my body temp is lower, would my "fever" of, say, about 96.9-97.0 actually be a fever, or might people with lower natural body temps see more variance in their natural temps without it being a sign of fever?
I really don't know what to do about the fever?!?!? Mine usually runs between 99-100, which I think is far from normal. I never used to sweat and now I sweat all the time! (since I came down with my illness about a year and half ago)....it's quite disgusting too. When I did sweat, like when I was doing heavy work, at least it didn't smell. Now, even when I'm just sitting here I sweat and it makes me stink!
Anybody have any suggestions? (Besides using some Secret....Yes I do wear that! )
Those are great questions! First of all, whenever you body is fighting an infection it usually causes a fever, which in most cases is good, as that means your body is fighting the infection off!
Sometimes Dr.'s do treat allergies with fever with antibiotics as a preventive to a secondary infection. As an example, you may be prone to getting sinusititis with your allergies, so they give the antibiotics to help prevent this from happening.
Re low grade normal temps. I have that problem, too. :) However, you are not considered running a temperature unless it's one degree more than 98.6.
As far as exercising with a fever goes, that's something that I'd prefer you ask your Dr. individually, as I don't know all your other health problems.
As a general rule, when your body is fighting an infection, you do not want to add more stress to it than it's already going through, but again, this is something to discuss with your Dr.
Wishing You Well!! - It was nice meeting you, come back soon!

I found a great site for you to read re fevers! I hope this helps. Just remember, that you should have this checked with your Dr. to make sure what the cause of the fever is to begin with, in case it's from something else.
"If you're an adult, a fever may be uncomfortable, but it usually isn't dangerous unless it measures 103 F or higher."
Huh.. interesting stuff about fever versus usual body temp. What's really weird is in the past couple of days it's ranged between 95.1 to 98.0.
O.O
I'll probably opt to go back to my doctor, anyway. He put me on Avelox and I'm having the problem of sleeplessness with it. Most sites with drug info say that's worth running by the doctor. Alas, Avelox is doing squat for me. Zithromax has always been a winner with sinus infections for me, so we'll see what he says.
I figured my fever was because my body either fighting itself or fighting an outside reaction. The fevers normally happen during work...of course which is where I have most of my reactions!
Do you have problems with fevers, too?! Have you told your Dr. this? If not...sometime when you notice you are running a fever with the allergies, stop by the office and just ask if the nurse could check your temperature. That way you get this documented & then they'll believe you!!
Good Luck, and thanks for stopping by here on the allergy forum, Joy! Please come back anytime.

Hi, all! I'm new here, and thank goodness I found this site!! I too have allergies (moderate) and chronic sinusitis. For months now, I have been running a low grade fever i.e. 99-100 degrees. It is driving me crazy and my docs don't really seem to care one way or another. I was on Cipro back in april for bronchitis, but the fevers still prevail. The worrysome part is that I was also recently diagnosed with a large (almost for sure benign) ovarian cyst and need to have surgery at the end of October. My GYN said that it could even be the cyst that is causing the fever, but it is rather unlikely. Hmmm. I just called my doc today and asked to go in for a CBC now, rather than wait until my pre-op visit (a week before the surgey) because if my white count is high and they suspect infection, I want to have enough time for it to resolve so that my surgery is not postponed!! I have a lot of yucky symptoms from the cyst and WANT IT OUT!! What do you guys do about the persistant fever?? Ibuprofen? What else could it be? I am in reasonably good health.
Gosh, you seem to be dealing with a lot right now - I'm sorry to hear that!!
I must tell you that having had the sinusitis, bronchitis, along with allergies could be causing you to be a bit run down and perhaps that is good that you insist on this CBC now!
Since we are an allergy forum, it's a lot off topic to discuss the ovarian cyst :) however, I've found a site for you to look at re that - I use this site frequently -it's very imformative. http://www.4woman.gov/faq/ovarian_cysts.htm#3
Much good luck to you and do me a favor?...please let me know how you're doing!!
Best Wishes and Hugs, Teri

I just went to the md today, because i have been suffering miserably since august 6th. I had to insist on a wide spectrum antibiotic. Symptoms: low grade fever, constant sore throat from post nasal drip, swollen glands, extreme fatigue most of the day, mental fog, and a little nausea to add to the mix. I know they keep telling me "it's just allergies," but man I feel pretty bad. In the morning i have to spit like a truck driver(no offense if any of you are), and pretty nasty stuff comes up.
I have my whole line up of stuff now: My Augmentin, nasacort spray, gargling salt, drinking a lot of water, no milk products, Emer'gen C, Quercitin, and a little friendly bacteria to ward off any trouble from the antibiotic. I may even hang upside down tonight if i can muster the energy.
I hope this works, I'll give it 3 days, because i am very cranky and miserable. What else can I do? Do I have it all covered?
Does your Dr. approve of hanging upside down? :) Just couldn't resist.
You may have picked up an infection from the way you sound - I'm surprised your Dr. didn't try to get a sputum sample from you, to check to see if you do have any bacteria and what kind it is - so that you'd be put on the correct antibiotic.
Let me know if that helps?! My best wishes to you.

Thanks for the prompt reply to my earlier post. I didn't mean to confuse. The ovarian cyst is a different problem - although one doc said it could also be causing the low grade fever. I was recently tested for all environmental, food and seasonal allergies at my allergist. I was suffering from various allergy/sinusitis symptoms, including a persistant low grade fever, and eventually treated for bronchitis with Cipro. Bronchitis better, but still have the fever and allergy symptoms. It was found that I am allergic (moderately to strongly) to several foods and ALL grasses, pollens, weeds, many trees, dust blah blah (mostly 5's). Is it common to suffer from a fever that lasts months and months?? Usually not over 99.5-100 degrees. My sinusitis symptoms i.e. massive sinus headaches are gone although i now again have some green (gross) mucus on the left side. My allergist wqants to start allergy shots. Is this the only way to get rid of the fever? It's driving me nuts and I am beginning to have some "rule out" tests done to make sure it is in fact caused by allergies. Sorry for the long post.
It used to always mean that when your mucous drainage was green there was an infection that needed antibiotics...in some cases that is not true. So re the fever and all I don't know what to tell you and think it's better for your Dr. to continue testing you to see what is causing this - in your case you may need a specific antibiotic to clear this up!
Please keep in touch, Deb!!
Hugs and best wishes, Teri
