Hello all. I’ve been away for a very long time. Life happened and I got too busy for Healingwell. Anyway, last week I was feeling extremely fatigued and wiped out. As I was sitting in the Michigan heat, I thought, I have zero energy!
And the light went off in my tiny brain and reminded me about malic acid. I used to take it daily, but kind of got away from it. So I started taking about a quarter teaspoon of malic acid morning and night, dissolved in a little bit of water, and then followed by a large glass of water. And it still works!
Malic acid is necessary for the mitochondria in your cells to transform glucose into energy. For some dumb reason, fiberomyalgics are lacking in malic acid, so we experience fatigue in our muscles and a general feeling of being worn down. Malic acid occurs naturally in such things as apple skins. I prefer to use the powder because I can’t eat that many apples.
I purchased my malic acid online from a company that makes candy ingredients. Malic acid is the thing that makes sour patch candy and sweet tarts so sour. It’s been a week, and now I have my strength and stamina recovering. This might work for you. Let me know if you have success with it.

Hi, Jeannie! It’s great seeing you again! I use malic acid and magnesium capsules. It’s a powder filled capsule and, yes, it really works and this magnesium is easy on your system too. I’m so glad it’s helping you!

Sherrine, would you mind sharing where you buy your malic acid and magnesium capsules? Thanks!
Jeannie, thanks for your post. I do remember when Sherrine had mentioned malic acid here a long while back, and I'm going to check it out. I have been taking magnesium glycinate, which is working well for me, so far.

I take Source Naturals Magnesium Malate that is 3,750 mg per serving. A serving is six capsules. I take three before breakfast and three before dinner. This is what is written about this product…
“Product Description
Supports proper muscle function
Promotes cardiovascular health and energy production
Combines magnesium and malic acid
Source Naturals Magnesium Malate combines the mineral magnesium with malic acid, which is a natural fruit acid that is present in most cells in the body. This combination supports proper muscle function, cardiovascular health and energy production. Each serving delivers 425 mg of this essential mineral.”
I get mine through Swansons. If you google Source Naturals magnesium malate 3,750 mg it will show you many places that have it but Swansons is the cheapest and they are good too. It’s actually the first one on the left. It costs $15.75 for a 33 day supply.
There is a higher dose of this product but I take the regular amount.

This is very interesting and timely for me! Despite having a fibro dx for over 15 years, I have mostly managed to ignore it's existence and just keep on going. Recently, thou, I've noticed much more aching and stiffness in the mornings, esp. if I have eaten much sugar the day before.
Do you folks notice sugar consumption affecting your fibro? Is this part of how/why the malic acid helps/works?
Thanks!

Thanks for that source, Sherrine. I love Swanson Health and order regularly from them. They have not only supplements but so much more.
Lynnwood, I don't know much about malic acid, but I sure notice that sugar hits me very hard! I had a bowl of ice cream last week, then tried a little more the following day. A big no-no! My body was not happy. I passed the ice cream on to one of my (adult) children and now my "ice cream" is blended banana chunks (slightly frozen, then blended with some milk). It's good, actually. I sometimes add a little vanilla or cocoa powder, just for variety.

Lynnwood, the increased pain comes from 1) aging 2) natural wear on joints
3) inflammation 4) fibro “burned-in pain pathways” that keep firing the pain signals even when the cause of the pain is gone
That last one is the one that gets you!
Luvminis, sugar and all carbohydrates are a huge causative factor for inflammation. Cut your carbs which cuts your inflammation which in turn reduces pain.
Malic acid is used in the mitochondria (energy factories) of your cells to convert glucose into energy. It’s part of the Krebs Cycle. If you don’t have enough malic acid like we don’t, the energy doesn’t get produced and we have low stamina, muscle weakness and can nap anytime. Malic acid gives me more energy ( but then I overdo!!! And have to recover for a day!!!) so I can get the boost to start the job.

I'm going to try the malic acid as it's now 2 in the morning and the pain isn't going away. I take Skelaxin and oxycodone and back it up with some herbals but tonight nothing's touching it. The muscles in the thighs and upper arms and back are on fire. I have arthritis, fibro and lupus, plus being a diabetic. I know since I got the "vid" a lot has changed in my body and pain levels have jacked up a ton. I was in a coma on a vent for 5 weeks and had to learn how to walk, talk, eat and breathe all over again. Today is the bad day and I only walked 3 miles where I've been shooting for 5 each day. Feeling real tired and weak. I've had arthritis since I was 7 and I'll be 70 soon so I've lived with pain for a whole lot of years but when I start whining about it, you know it's pretty intense. Any help with herbals would be appreciated as I'm allergic to a host of "normal" meds. Thanks
Nana, tumeric is supposed to help with pain. It might be worth a try!

We can also be allergic to herbals and naturals , so just check how you do and add if tolerated.
I have been using that source naturals for years after hearing sherrine liked it..she should get commissions 😂
Also many years ago a holistic dr recommended d ribose for energy production.. i have used it ever since..
When pain is severe somewhere.. i rub oregano oil into it..not all can use it, but i love it and georgetown univ. did a study on it years ago , said strongest topical pain killer on the planet.. its also the only product that stops that intense itch we can get with fibro..

Does the malic acid give you heartburn at all?
No, and I’m susceptible to heartburn. I divide my daily serving in half and take half before breakfast and the other half before dinner. Everyone is different but this is my experience with it.
