Hi, I have been diagnosed with proctitis, I was using the foam enemas ( starting with m) but I am getting flares about once a month (which the enemas seems to help with) the problem I'm having is that I only have one kidney, and was told that if im having flares this regularly that I need to be put on balsalazide tablets, after reading the info with them I can see that again these can cause problems with my kidney. After reading the predfoam info it seems there are no known adverse effects with those unless I have a certain auto immune disorder ( which I dont) my question is should I go back to the doctor and ask to be put on the predfoam where there seems to be a lot less chance of damaging my kidney compared to the other options, I can't understand why the doctor would have put me on either of the other two medications knowing that I only have the one when there seems to be am option that won't risk causing damge :-/ any advice appreciated please
Have you tried mesalamine enemas? or Canasa? Those are viable long-term treatment options. You can use them regularly and they are not steroids. Were you using the enemas daily or just when you have symptoms? A lot of people here use them at lease a few times a week.

It was salofalk that I was on, but they can cause kidney damage that why they swapped me
Kidney damage would be a very rare side effect.

I understand that but not a risk worth taking especially when there are alternatives that don't pose that risk surely?
I wonder if there's any evidence of kidney issues arising from mesalamine enemas. Does anyone have any stats?

This is off the mesalamine enemas leaflet, and the reason they said they were changing me to the tablets.
Other rare events, which have been reported with mesalazine, include:
changes in kidney function and inflammation of the kidney
changes in blood test results such as low white blood cell and/or platelet counts
changes in liver function tests
liver disease with nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, feeling generally unwell, fever, itching, yellowing of the skin and eyes, and dark coloured urine
changes relating to your heart
allergic, inflammatory or other lung conditions
shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, cough, wheezing, chest pain that worsens when breathing.
As a precaution, your doctor may have your blood, liver and kidney tested regularly during treatment with SALOFALK.

And this is off the tablets leaflet,
Problems with the kidneys including renal malfunction have been reported. Symptoms may include:
• blood or any other changes in your urine,
• rash, fever,
• loin or joint pain,
• fluid retention,
• decreased urine.
Inflammation of the heart, liver and pancreas have been reported. Symptoms of these are:
• Inflammation of the heart: chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness and fatigue.
• Inflammation of the liver: flu like symptoms, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) and
abdominal pain.
• Inflammation of the pancreas: abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) like syndrome has been reported. Symptoms are:
• inflammation of the joints, connective tissue, tendons and organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys or skin.
Which is why I don't understand the swap :-/ from having some thing to use topically to something that twice daily and the predfoam leaflet has no side effects, wondering why they didn't put me on that first? Thanks for all the help

The tablets, I understand.
The enemas, I wonder how often "rare" kidney side effects occur?
Predfoam isn't seen as a long-term solution. it's for treatment of active inflamation, then you stop it or transition to a long-term maintenance medication, like mesalamine. If you're using the predfoam infrequently, it's not a problem. I've used it for a months consistently, but it was never my plan to continue using it daily indefinitely.
