What do you guys think about this study? I am not an expert so I am curious to hear from people more knowledgeable than me.

Ooh this article looks really interesting but I don't have a subscription so will have to think about whether to buy it so I can read it in full. That's an interesting comment they make about gut flora balance (microbiome homeostasis) vs treating inflammatory pathways, because it suggests that in the future our gut flora could maybe be analysed and rebalanced in a more bespoke, targeted way, although it does say at the end that they'd be looking for 'other pathways that could be inhibited' so it sounds like their aim will be new drugs rather than resetting the microbiome (the pharmaceutical industry want to make money after all).

Look at the author affiliations and acknowledgements - this research was done by academics funded through gastroenterology associations, i.e. independent of the pharmaceutical industry. When the said "other pathways could be inhibited" I didn't read that to mean new drugs. It just means the path or means by which inflammation is triggered, in this case via targeting certain bacteria.

Also interesting to note that only SOME of the UC patients had an excess of this bacteria (alluding to not all UCs are the same...). So a targeted treatment would not help all patients.

Very interesting! Apparently it links certain bacteria to possible influence on digestive enzymes which could explain why diet is often a factor.

I think it also interesting that the mice developed colitis once the bacteria were transplanted in their bowels. Maybe it is a clue that disbiosis is indeed one of the cause (and not symptoms) of UC ?
