Hi Zach's Granny,
I have to say one thing and this isn't an arguement or anything....but why don't you believe any disease is genetic? There are a lot of type2s who are young and have looked after themselves. I do agree that there are a lot of environmental factors (such as the additives put into our everyday food and drinks etc) but surely you must accept that there's a genetic disposition and that environmental factors just help to tip the scales?
There is an illness called sickle cell anemia (not sure whether I spelt that right) but basically it occurs when two parents have slightly 'mis-shaped' blood cells which are there as a kind of evolutionary way of tackling malaria. Basically, the child's blood cells are seriously 'mis-shaped' or sickle-shaped and so it causes serious illness. Now, wouldn't you say this is genetic? Why can't it therefore be right that at least t2 is partly genetic?
I hope you don't think I'm being arguementative, I just wanted to put my view across about it - I'm happy to hear others views but I'm sure there are a lot of t2s out there who would be a little upset to hear someone think it's their own fault for getting this disease.
I also want to say that although in some deep tropical jungle there could be some sort of natural remedy to help diabetes, t1 occurs because our pancreas can no longer make insulin. There isn't a natural remedy for it - we need insulin. If there were to be something which kick-started the pancreas into making insulin again then fine, but t1 occurs because antibodies in the body attack the insulin-making cells in the pancreas and therefore make them unable to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone and one which our body needs to live. For all the supplements and natural remedies out there, they aren't insulin. They make help regulate our blood sugars a bit but are no replacement for insulin.
One other thing - antibiotics have saved millions of lives around the world. Everything is dangerous in one respect or another - insulin is dangerous if too much is taken. But we have to balance out the benefits and the problems, and do what is best.
Sorry - I really don't mean to be part of a war or anything - I really do respect that you have other views but I believe I am right and like to voice what I believe!!

Some people find hope in possible cures, I donate to research. Some try alternative or herbal helps, I try some things, check my sugars and use what works... FOR ME. I can't do anything but offer ideas of what I know works for me and maybe what the general medical community consensus is on meds and herbals. I cannot control this thing and that's the hardest part of all for me because I'm a controller!
Take care all.

Hi Claire, nice to meet you. I usually have to post anything I write in a hurry because I don't spend a whole lot of time on the computer, So maybe I should take a little longer to explain myself better. I don't think I said that being sick was "your fault" But I do think it is our life style's fault. I mean all of us. We like for things to be easy so we buy processed foods. We run to the Dr. with even small ailments, then they hand out drugs like candy. And yes I would take the antibiotics if I had to I have in the past. But until I do "have" to I try to do other things to boost my immune system. And if I have to take the antibiotics After I got through with them I would take a probiotic to put back the good bacteria that the drug killed as it was killing the bad. I do not think there is a herb in the rain forest that will cure everything . I am a little more realistic than that. I do however feel that all and I do mean ALL illnesses come from a weakened immune system And I also know that only the immune system can cure you. The only thing we can do is try to keep as much of the bad out as possible so we can have stronger immune systems. As far as you wanting to know why I don't feel that it is genetic well, We all learn certain things from our parents, and they, their parents and so on. Traditions, opinions, foods, ect. Now I said it is our lifestyle's fault But even our lifestyle is not totally under our control. The FDA has more say about us than we do. We never know what we are eating Or what we are taking. They don't want us to know. And trust me Claire-bear We probably don't even want to know . You mentioned sicle cell anemia , well my hat is off to you because I really don't know a whole lot about it. I think it only affects the black race, if that Is true ,Then maybe I need to back up a step and say that 98% is not because of genetics. I see people with the same disease all the time and as far as I know they are not geneticaly related . And don't ever worry about giving your opinion It's ok to be argumentive Hey I do it a lot. I respect your opinion and your right to have it. (s) I do think there is a need for doctors, I just think they should get involved more in other methods of treating miner stuff with something other than drugs. Hope I helped you to understand why I have the opinion I do.
Take care
Lets not be naive about genetics. There are many known diseases that are genetic in their basis, and just because you can't trace a link in your family doesn't mean the gene hasn't been recessive for over a century! There are over 60 well known genetic "diseases" that can be tested for and linked to a specific gene or dna marker. Tay sachs, Sickle cell anemia, progeria, etc. are all well known well documented genetic disorders. Please don't try to tell me that an infant born with Tay-sachs disease or prorgeria that dies prematurely, contracted these horrible conditions due to "lifestyle".
The fact that they are doing research into the genetic markers for diabetes and have hopes of a vaccine based on this research certainly doesn't mean this is a disease of opportunity. Yes we are all entiltled to our opinions, but sometimes those opinions are just wrong. So for those of you that are type 1 diabetics, PLEASE don't think that you're lifestyle or anything you did caused your conditions. Especially in Juvenile diabetics, you are just born with something broken, and you need to take steps to compensate for that to live a normal life. Read through the threads in this forum.
Do you think the little girl that is type 1, whom her parents wake up multiple times a night to check her blood sugar contracted this disease??? I don't think so. I think she was born with it, and it waited a certain amount of time to manifest itself to the point where doctors could say..."ahhh...she's a type one juvenile diabetic".
I truely appreciate your opinions and your participation in this forum, but you are dead wrong on genetic diseases and very wrong on the causes of type one diabetes.

I can only please one person per day, today is not your day...tomorrow doesn't look good either.
