I had my surgery May 8th and was taken off my PPI the same day. I realize I am still healing but have read on other posts that many of you continued to take your PPI for several months after surgery. While I am healing great incision wise I am wondering about the "warmth" I feel in my stomach at times and some other chest pain symptoms that very much mock my acid reflux symptoms prior to surgery. I am questioning if I would feel these symptoms had I continued my PPI through the healing process. Any advise would be greatly apprciated!!
One other thing, doctor wants me to start small amounts/bites of "real" food beginning next week. I worry that I won't be able to differentiate what might be a reaction to a food versus symptoms associated to how I'm currently feeling...hope this makes sense!
Hi TJ,
I am 6 months out and still on PPI's. I think is quite unusual though, but every time I have tried to cut back I get flare up of my LPR symptoms. Now finally it seems I have been able to cut down to 15mg Lansoprazole in the morning while sticking to 30mg at night.
Due to my trouble I am now scheduled for new 24h ph test on June the 6th to do a quality check of my wrap.
I know not very helpful, but to calm you down I was told by my surgeon that it is perfectly normal to be needing them the first 3 months, but then you should be able to reduce.
Food wise I am strong beliver of quitting the liquid diet as soon as you can. The longer you are on liquid the longer it will take to adjust back to normal food. In priority I would:
- Follow my doctor directions on diet
- Use my own common sense to find out if I am advancing the diet too fast
- Get good advice on diets from this forum
Good luck with your recovery!

I was told to stop PPIs right after all 3 of my nissens. I did try them again when I had problems with my 1st one. Didn't help any since my symptoms were from food sitting above the wrap.
Since my last redo 08/24/11 I haven't had any reflux symptoms at all.
Take care,
Bill
