replacing electrolytes?

I seem to have a bit of a stomach bug, as I'm having to run to the restroom at least every half hour. Back in the day, I'd make sure to drink some Gatorade to replace my electrolytes, but now that I'm diabetic, I shy away from that stuff since it's got so many carbs in it. Is there anything out there made specifically for us so that we don't become dehydrated and whatnot in these situations? Or are there other good sources of electrolytes? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
When you're losing that much fluid and electrolytes it can be a problem. Are you on any diabetes meds? Have you called your doctor? One good source of electrolytes that is safe is Pedialyte for kids, but I'm not sure about the carb level. It may come in a sugar free, but you may also need some of those carbs.

I hate to use you as an example but this should be a lesson to all of us on preparing for the next bout of stomach flu or diarhea (sorry, can't spell it!). Whomever helped you with your initial food plan should be able to help you with sick times, too.

I'm on Avandamet 4/1000 twice a day. My Doc is out of the office Friday-Sunday, so I just took some leftover Lomotil we had around the house and lived off of Gatorade, chicken and stars soup (because the stars are so much more fun than noodles!) and crackers, and cream of wheat for a few days, even though I wouldn't normally go near any of that stuff. I've been checking my blood sugar pretty frequently to keep an eye on things, and the highest I've seen it get is 135, so I guess getting my numbers down to 80-110 for the past few months has really helped my body be able to stand the occasional carb-overload. I'm doing much better now and should hopefully be able to return to my normal eating habits tomorrow. And, if I remember to, I'll ask my doc next time I see him what I should do when I get sick (there are always so many things I want to discuss that I never remember them all when I go into his office...).
Hey, I have an idea! (Jeannie is being sarcastic here....) You could write it all down!

LOL! Gally, I have found that if I put my questions on the bottom of my med sheet that I print off from my computer the Doc always sees them even if I forget to ask. I keep track of my meds on a document in Word and just keep updating it every so often when a new med is added. I also include all of the over the counter things I take from primrose oil to psyllium. This helps my doctor when she sees I'm taking something like cinnamon that does have sugar lowering properties and she can take it into account when she prescribes my new refills.

Every doctor appt. or dentist appt I have I just print off the meds list for them. That way I don't have to remember everything. Since I past 50 my brain is shrinking and the synapses don't always connect. Can't remember stuff anymore.

::chuckles::: Im always Postscripting Jeannie lately, but thats cause she's always here with the good post first!!!

POSTscript - My endocrinologist see's me once every three months, BUT...we have a system where I fax him my blood sugars once a week and any concerns I have.  He can adjust my meds basically on the fly and leave me a quick voice mail on my concerns.  If its something more serious...I, of course, get summoned to his office.  I love Jeannies system.  This is just an offshoot that might work for some of you out there, in combination with Jeannie's method!

I have not found a sugar free version of pedialyte yet. Has anyone?
Welcome to the Diabetes Forum, naturepath. I have no idea about Pedialyte but there are may products out there today like Powerade Zero and VitaminWater Zero that have electrolytes. You can easily find these and compare all their ingredients online.

Do you have diabetes?

I have found Emergen -c hydration plus ,one packet has 36 sachets and ea. has8 g of sugar when mixed in 16-22 oz of water. It is kinda expensive as pedialyte has 10 gms of sugar in 8 ozbut its cheaper overall.

I do not drink powerade or gatorade as its like petrochemical byproduct.

Also low sugar coconut water which is hard to find is the best electrolyte .Just be careful when you see labels as they talk about 8 oz but bottles are 24 oz so we need to multiply that.
I am having hard time finding a sugar free/no sugar added coconut water recently.
Once I find it will post here.

Good point about the added sugar, cilly. In our house, we've been drinking Almond Breeze Coconut/Almond Milk with no added sugar and it's barely 1 gr carb for a glass, I think. Almond Breeze sells a sugar-added version, too, so you have to be careful reading the labels.
