I am new to this site, and I'm looking forward to learning new things and getting some insights into this awful disease. I was wondering if anyone has seen anything about the levels of serotonin in people with IBS. Are medications like Zoloft safe or do they just cause more problems? I suffer from severe depression and want to be careful here. Thank you.

Regarding Seratonin. I read somewhere where there is more Seratonin in the digestive system than in the brain. Like 90% Can't remember where I read it but am sure you can google it for better info. 
"Zelnorm mimics the natural effects of serotonin, stregnthening transmission in critical neural pathways, which normalizes impaired motility in the GI tract..."
I found that on the Novartis website when I was researching Zelnorm (before I started taking it).
I wonder if our problems would be fixed if some doc just prescribed us straight serotonin.
