Has anyone taken Singular? What has been your experience with it? Side effect? I am already starting to have allergy symptoms this year. I have been to a pulmonoligist who can't really say if I have asthma or not, because I don't have any wheezing. I do however, get a lot of shortness of breath, and the feeling that I can't get a deep breath. To make matters worse, I have Mitral Valve Prolapse so my heart doctor doesn't want me on any inhalers that might speed up my heart rate. So I am stuck suffering especially in the summer. I have also noticed that high humidity seems to make my symptoms much worse.
I spoke to a nurse who mentioned Singular and said there are really no side effects , and that it is safe for people with heart problems.
Does anyone know anything about this drug?

I tried Singulair once for my allergies. I personally didn't like it because it made me feel like I was sucking on a cold wind pipe. But many many people use this with no complications what so ever and it's actually quite a good med.

Have used Singulair since it came out. It is the FIRST time in my life that my asthma has been under control. I have never experienced side effects. For me, this is a MIRACLE drug. I am in my 40's and have had asthma since birth. To be able to laugh/cry and even just sleep through the night without wheezing is amazing to me. My kids take it with no side effects, either. I use Advair and Singulair to control my symptoms. Albuterol (rescue inhaler) was something I used all day, every day. Now rarely - maybe 1-3 times each week. Humidity is an issue for me, too. That is also under control now. I suggest that you do not set your air conditioner too cool. Sometimes the shock of going outside into humid weather can trigger an attack. Best of luck! God bless.
I had heard somewhere (maybe this board, but maybe another one, not sure) that Singulair caused some mood swings and severe irritability in people which made me nervous about taking it but having seen these good responses I'm rethinking.
I take singulair everynight before bed and it has been a Godsend!!! I actually feel like I control my asthma now instead of it controling me!
Singulair is a MIRACLE DRUG!! I have very severe asthma since I was born. Ever since singulair came out when I was about 14 years old, I've been on it. Now it's like I don't even have asthma. I'm 21 years old now and haven't visited the ER ever since singulair. Hope you give it a try and beginning breathing better! :)
I have been taking Singulair for allergies along with Astelin & Flonase nasal sprays..since taking the Singulair, I literally feel like a new person! I have no side affects and have been waking up without headaches after having them every morning for years! I love this stuff and after trying almost every other allergy pill there is, I am finally feeling some relief!

Hi- Ive just started taking Singulair- 2 days now.
How long before anyone noticed an improvement in their asthma - especially coughing which seems to be my main symptom?
Ive had a permanent headache since taking them - is thiis just co-incidence or does anyone have experience of this as a side effect?

Hi everyone! I have never posted on this board before, as I am usually on the fibro and anxiety boards. I don't have asthma but my son does. He was placed on singulair to help control his asthma a few years ago. Unfortunately, he developed URI's much more frequently while taking the singulair.I mentioned this to his doc who informed me that that is one of the more rare side effects I told the doc that I wanted that med stopped. But I am glad that so many of you have great experiences with it! I know so many others that have had a big improvement taking singulair... Good luck
P.S. Do any of you mind if I pop in from time to time to ask questions about asthma? Like I said my son has it and sometimes I feel like I would like to talk to others who know about it

Mayfly, here is the side effects of singulair and yes headaches amongst them:
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking montelukast and seek emergency medical attention or notify your doctor immediately:
an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
numbness, tingling, or pain;
a rash or unexplained open sores or bruising;
a flu-like illness;
severe inflammation (pain and swelling) of the sinuses; or
worsening respiratory symptoms.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take montelukast and talk to your doctor if you experience
upset stomach, stomach pain, or heartburn;
dizziness or headache;
tiredness;
sore throat or cough, or
nasal irritation.

Been on Singular a long time. Never had any problems. As far as bronchodilators and heart problems go, have you ever tried Xopenex nebulized? It was designed for heart patients with respiratory problems.

I have been taking it for 2 months now and am doing fine on it. I am usually very sensitive to side effects too!! Thanks mg5ds for the coupon link! My advair, singular cost me $85 a month! Ouch! I take a lot of other meds too!
I have never had issues with allergies until this year I have had it bad for over a week and nothing i took was helping i thought it might of been a cold but it did not help. I went to the doctor and they have me on xyzal in the mornings and singulair at night and that was thursday and I already feel so much better.
I have taken Singulair for several years with no problems..........

I took singulair for a couple of years and I have to say it is the wonder drug. Put a halt to my allergies during the summer and really curbed my asthma issues.
Its a shame its so expensive now that I'm not on my moms drug plan anymore.

singulair gets to the heart of the problem for people who have allergies. I like it very much as I am a very allergic person. Contact Merck if you find the financial load too hard to bear. Merck is the manufacturer of the singular. Take care of yourselves.
I take it, and it seems to help limit the breathing attacks I used to get a lot from outdoor air and environments. According to my doctors, I don't have asthma. That may be, but I do know that when I finally got to try it, I stopped having these stupid spells of chest tightness and breathlessness when windows were open that went away quickly once the windows were closed. I even tested myself about that one day: windows open - 5 minutes later, I felt breathless. Windows closed - it eased up and stayed gone. Windows open again - back to the breathing trouble. Back and forth, like clockwork for an afternoon into an evening. Then, I got fed up with the obnoxious pattern and went to the ER and asked to try Singulair.
Again, I understand that asthma attacks aren't that quick in coming and going, but I've always suspected some odd bronchospasm-type thing without the mucus, triggered by allergens. Singulair helps.

I can't speak to whether or not it is safe for *you* but I personally have had nothing but good experiences with this medication. It was originally prescribed to me as a way to supplement my steroid inhaler and help me deal with my environmental allergies. It worked wonders for the allergies and so well on the asthma that I was able to stop using the steroid puffer altogether. The only side-effects I had were a touch a light-headedness for the first few days right after I began taking it. Other than that, no issues at all.
My current drug plan, however, doesn't cover it, and so I've switched back to the steroid puffer. I really wish I could afford to go back on the singulair!

My son took it on and off for a couple of years. He is 7. He seemed to be more irritable and developed some heartburn problems on it, and complained a lot about a stomach ache - all listed as side effects except the irritability. From everything I am reading, it seems that the older you are the better it seems to work?
