trouble with effexor stablizing

hi, I  am  new  to this particular  forum but not to this site.  I am writing this about  my  husband.  He has struggled with depresssion for  our whole  marriage and then some.  We have been married  almost 20 yrs.  He was  on   Fluxoamine for about  14 yrs,  with  no marked improvement, even tho he told he   Phycristist  every thing was fine.
We have  had alot of things happen  in the  last 2 yrss that I won't get into, but he decided to get real with the doc andd they  put him on  effexor.  This med  has seem to really work good,,,,for a number of wks, and then he can feel himself sliding  back.    Then they increase the dosage and things  are fine for an number of wks again, and then down he   goes again.  I think he  is  up to about 450mgs already.  Things are down again.  We are getting very frustrated as  I am  sure  you understand.  I   don't know  if they need to add  another med or what.   When it  works  good things are awesome!  When the  don''t, well, you can imagine things get alittle tense,  and our 16 yr old daughter has  just  been daignosed with Crohns, so we  really don''t need this  extra  pressure.
Now that you know all that,  is there any one out there who has experineced this same type  of problem?  What  did you  do?  I could really use some support  and  ideas on what  we should do.
Thanks for  listening!!

Blessingss,
Sweet

Well, it is good that he if finally communicating with his doctor.  It is imperative that he continues to do so for the benefit of his treatment.  I can only hope that he understands that now.  When someone is having difficulty responding to typical medications psychiatrists can choose to stack antidepressants on top of each other.  This is common.  450 mg of Effexor is quite a bit, the doctor may be just waiting to see if he will stabilize.  Sometimes it can take weeks to reach therapeutic level it is different for each person.  I would suggest if he doesnt start to feel better soon to call the doctor.  Please keep us updated on how he is doing...... Take care

thanks, Els
He has an appointment with his Dr on Tuesday, so that is good.  His Dr said he can go  up to 600 mgs of effexor.  Sounds like an awful lot to me, but I guess he knows what he is doing.  Thanks for answering my post.

update on hubby: dr put him on Wellbutrin, well is putting him on it, when it comes in, seems to be a shortage here in Canada, don't know about the USA. So he will be on 450mg effexor and 100 mg wellbutrin to start with.

the shortage is only 100 mg pill ,plenty of 150 which is the same as forgive my spelling "zyban "  the pill they give you to help quit smoking ,pharmysts here are calling into docs and the doctor will usually up the dosage to 150 with the patients consent...had to do that here
