Had both procedures done today in order to rule out whatever may be causing D other than the dredded IBS.
Colonoscopy Findings: The entire examined colon was normal - Biopsies were taken with a cold forcepts for histology in the ascending, transverse, decending colon and rectum. Impression: The colon is normal. Recommendations: Await pathology results.
The above and below is exactly how it reads from my medical record.
Upper GI Endoscopy Findings: A single 3 mm an with no bleeding an forty cm from the incisors. Biopsies were taken with cold forceps for histology. The exam was otherwise without abnormality. A small hiatus hernia was found. The proximal extent of the gastric folds (end of tublaresophagus) was 41 cm from the incisors. The hiatal narrowing was 39 cm from the incisors. Diffuse mucosal flattening was found in the 2nd part of the duodenum. Biopsies were taken with a cold forceps for histology.
The way I understand the above is - there is nothing there to cause 3 to 4 days a week of D.
I was going to ask the GI Doctor about long term Imodium use but I was pretty well drugged-up when I saw him -forgot.

Well it seems like besides the hiatal hernia that everything checked out okay. This is good, no? I understand the frustration that this disorder isn't visible but that doesn't make it not real. We are in the same boat on this one and we can all understand. Thanks for posting your results :) Is your doctor going to try something new for the D? Are you on any antispasmodics for the cramping?

p.s. I noticed that you mentioned you had diverticulosis before, was there any report on that? is it ok, no inflammation there?
Well it seems like besides the hiatal hernia that everything checked out okay. This is good, no? I understand the frustration that this disorder isn't visible but that doesn't make it not real. We are in the same boat on this one and we can all understand. Thanks for posting your results :) Is your doctor going to try something new for the D? Are you on any antispasmodics for the cramping?

I also just had my tests ran back in November and I also have IBS-D and a hiatal hernia. Well, he thinks my IBS-D is stemmed from my acid reflux. The doc seems to think if I get the acid reflux under control again, the IBS will iron itself out. I hope so.....he put me on Nexium and it's taking forever to kick in but it's starting to work. I am eating a little bit more now than I could last month. Hope you get better soon!! Did you have reflux, too?? Did he give you anything for it??? Also, are you on an antispasmodic?? The doctor took me off of the Levsin because it irritated my reflux. He gave me Pamine, but it dries me out too bad. I'm scared when I'm on that stuff. My whole head dries out so bad that I cannot swallow. I cannot produce saliva....My nose bleeds.....It's very scary. The nurse told me to cut it back from a whole one to a half but I'm scared to take it anymore. I want something else......Any suggestions??? That won't irritate my reflux???

OH, also......I take imodium at least twice a week and it works just fine. Sometimes if I take too much I will be C for a couple days, though. But, it's fine to take it on a regular basis. My best friend's dad has UC and has been on it every single day for the past 30 years!! He uses so much of it, his doctor gave him a script so he can get it free through insurance.

Michelle, as far as medications are concerned, I suggest you follow your doctors recommendations. I don't have acid reflux. The only meds I take are lomotil for serious times away from a toilet. Also take Imodium daily but it doesn't always work as advertized. Several times a month, sometimes weekly, while driving, I have to scurry off the road and go D. Sometimes in the bushes or behind a dumpster. I do my best to stay off the Interstate during rush hour. Big nightmare with IBS-D - stuck in traffic. Anytime I am more than three minutes away from a toilet, I get worried. Good luck and keep pounding on the VA to increase you IBS rating. Never give-up!! Ray
