Urinary Tract Infections???

My colon was removed in July and an ostomy bag was put in its place.. I'm still adjusting... However, I've been getting UTI's like no ones business. This is my 4th since July! Could it be my stoma thats causing it? I'm VERY clean about the bathroom process, I'll urinate THEN empty my pouch if needed.. I wash and disinfect my hands like a maniac. Yet here I am, frustrated with another UTI.
Before my surgery, I never had UTI's.. I can't figure this out for the life of me and I'm trying to get as much help as I can with out going to a doctor.. I'm a crohns patient with no insurance.. So, all suggestions are welcome before I go racking up more astronomical bills...

Also ignore my signature.. haha.. I'm not on any meds right now.

Diagnosed with UC in 06 then it was changed to CD in 07
Currently on: 36 mg steroids, Colazal, Remicade.
I've been on: Pentasa, asacol, methotrexate, immuran (I had a bad reaction to it), Enemas.. on and on and on..
I've had flare ups in my stomach but most of my symptoms resemble UC.. so my doc is unsure of what I have or if it's both.. I'm irritated by this fact.

I was the queen of the UTI's, so awful aren't they?? Ok...this is what I do now and haven't had a UTI for a long time. Go to your local pharmacy and buy some cranberry pills. You will find them in the vitamin aisle. Here in Canada "Webber Naturals" is a really good brand. We go to New Orleans alot, and last Sept. I bought "Nature's Bounty" brand. Follow the directions, usually 2 pills a day, depending on the amount of mg's. Hope it helps!!

I used to be on a preventative daily for UTIs, because I got them so bad.  There are AZO Standard Cranberry tablets at Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens, taken daily to prevent UTIs.  Also, there are AZO Standard tablets to take for pain, if you have a UTI.

Didn't know they had pills but I drink lots of real cranberry juice when I think it's coming on.

I had my ileo is Aug. and have noticed urination feels different than before. Anyone else have push problems? Not incontinent but muscles aren't working the same. Anyone else notice this? Was wondering Kanditron if that could be part of problems?

When I go to DR. next I will try to remember to ask about it and let you know.

Some additional things that might help: wear only white underwear, take showers and no baths, no fabric softeners, and void after intercourse.

what has possibly happened is that you got one in the hostpial, which is very commone fromthe cathether, and its never gone away completly.
Im not sure what meds they are giving you for it. I had an infectin a while back, and the dr wanted to give me a high dose that stays in your system a while, or is supposed to and i explained my ileo to him and he said, well we will try a different med. So its possible your meds arent getting absorbed or that you stil have the original UTI just never completly cured.

UC for 8 years, before finally kicking its butt and having a permanent ileostomy April 17 2007!

Yes, my bladder feels different now than it did before all the surgeries. It feels full more often and feels different when I push. I think all the surgery and the catheter use affected it somehow

I was going to ask if anyone else was having issue's with urination. I feel like my bladder must have shrunk to the size of a pea. I drink a bit more then before Oscar but am ALWAYS having to go pee. What gives?

Well, ladies, unfortunately when our colons were removed and our body parts found new homes, all of our bladders moved to the same place mad my Gyn explained that when the rectum is removed everything kind of sinks down and gravity cannot quite do the job it used to...but as long as there isn't any pain (sex, urination) it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't have the UTI's (knock on wood!) but I have to really relax to pee...and when I have to go, I HAVE to go (especially after a few beers)!!!
i still have a my rectum. they left it so i can have a j-pouch someday.

Hello Kanditron

I had UTI's plague me thought my UC years and my doctor put me on a drug that stops the bacteria multiply and prevents infection. Its called Hiprex and its a game changer. The only UTI i have had in 3 years was recently aquired in hospital and this was because i hadn't been taking.

Active ingredient - Hexamine hippurate
Use - Hexamine hippurate is used to suppress or eliminate urinary bacteria associated with chronic or recurrent infection.

Hexamine hippurate helps to acidify the urine and maintain a low urinary pH.

Hiprex may be used for short or long term treatment.

Hope this helps
HExamine hipperate changed the game for me too. Docoput me on 5 years ago andtbe only UTI I’ve had in past few years was acquired in hospital because i hadn’t been taking my meds.

Get onto it.

@Clo, it is not a supplement, it's available by prescription only. I had no idea what it was so I looked it up.

I have been on Stelara for UC for two years. This past year I had 8 UTI’s! Finally went to a urologist who after numerous tests put me in Esterol cream. She also recommended a supplement called ‘Uquora Control’ like you I am a fanatic about wiping etc, cranberry pills and juice daily had not helped. So I purchased it. Not only have I not had a UTI my flare which had gone on for three months stopped. Clearly this could be a coincidence regarding my flare but I’ll take it! The only ingredients I see in it are high levels of vitamin D and green tea extract (caffeine removed) just wanted to share
